Step-by-step tutorial: untethered jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 on iPhone, iPod or iPad using Greenpois0n for Mac OS
These are step-by-step instructions on how to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad, iPod Touch 2G, iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 4G using Greenpois0n for Mac OS X. Tutorial for Windows users is available here. All the steps are the same for all devices, we will cover iPhone.
Greenpois0n has been updated to support the iOS 4.1 and iOS 4.2.1 firmware. Use Limera1n if you want to jailbreak iOS 4.0, iOS 4.0.1, iOS 4.0.2.
Remember: Greenpois0n recommends a clean restore before continuing.
Unlockers: do not update to iOS 4.1 or iOS 4.2.1 if you need the unlock. Ultrasn0w does not support that baseband yet. The only exception is the iPhone 4. Experienced users can also try update to iOS 4.2.1 without upgrading your baseband by using TinyUmbrella. Start TSS Server->Start iTunes->Plug in your iPhone->Restore 4.2.1->Error 1013->Put phone into DFU Mode->Launch Greenpois0n.

GreenPois0n RC5 released: untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1
The Chronic Dev-Team has finally released the new version of Greenpois0n, which features a full untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1. No SHSH blobs needed. The exploit used has already been patched in iOS 4.3, so it not work on future iOS 4.3.
You can jailbreak iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 2G, iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 4G, iPad. Unlike redsn0w 0.9.6 this is untethered, so there is no need to connect iOS device to a computer after restart.
There is only Mac OS X version available. Chronic Dev-Team will release Windows and probably Linux version soon.
Unlockers: do not update to stock iOS 4.2.1. You should keep your baseband version. Wait for new version of PwnageTool.
You can download GreenPois0n RC5 from here.

Untethered Jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 announced
The Chronic Dev-Team has announced via twitter an untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1. This should work for iPhone 3GS (new bootrom), iPhone 4 and iPad. And it will not require saved iOS 4.2b3 SHSH keys.
The untether is demoed in the video below. It's a result of a collaboration between @0naj, @p0sixninja, and @pod2g. P0sixninja has previously said it will not require iOS 4.2b3 SHSH blobs.
A small bug with wifi still remains. They will release utility as soon as they fix it.
Here is a video proof:

Last week we reported that the well-known hacker Geohot might call his next jailbreak tool rubyra1n. Now guts from Dev Team hit that they know something about Geohot’s effort to bring a proper untethered jailbreak to iOS 4.2.1.
A recent tweet from MuscleNerd confirms the rumors: "I hear geohot does have an untether actually! Though not for all devices".

DevTeam Successfully Untethers iPhone iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak
Currently iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS new bootrom, iPad, iPod 3G/4G is a tethered jailbreak. That means if you have to reboot your device, it will show a "connect to itunes" logo until you run the jailbreak software again. Musclenerd from iPhone DevTeam has announced that untethered jailbreak for iPhone iOS 4.2.1 is ready. Unfortunately this will be only for those who saved 4.2b3 SHSH keys via Cydia or tinyumbrella.
Got "backup plan" for untethered 4.2.1 JB working (video coming up). Uses mysterious 4.2b3 hashes Cydia kept for you.
"Backup plan" because hacker comex is working on a more extensible jailbreak. We'll keep you up to date with more information as it develops. For now you can watch the proof video:

Step-by-step Tutorial: How to Jailbreak and Unlock Your iPhone 3GS Using RedSn0w 0.9.6b5 (Windows) [iOS 4.2.1]
UPDATE: Please think first, before you do something.
UPDATE 2: If you have 05.13 baseband or lower - do not update to 4.2.1, use PwnageTool to create custom firmware!
UPDATE 3: If you have new bootrom and ios 4.1, do not update to 4.2.1 - you will loose untethered jailbreak.
UPDATE 4: WARNING: updating to iPad baseband for iPhone unlock may disable your GPS
This is step-by-step instructions on how to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone 3GS on iOS 4.2.1 firmware using RedSn0w 0.9.6b5 for Windows.
For iPhone 3G use this tutorial.
If you have an iPhone 3GS with the new bootrom you will only be able to perform a tethered jailbreak at this time. This means you will need Redsn0w's assistance to boot into your jailbroken device.
UPDATE: Please, consider reading our Jailbreak & Unlock FAQ, especially if you have questions or troubles.
IMPORTANT FOR UNLOCKERS
During this process you can update your baseband to the 06.15 version. If you are on 05.14 or 05.15 or higher you will need to do this to unlock. You do not need to do this for jailbreak only. Please read the following very carefully before deciding whether to do this.

RedSn0w 0.9.6b4: jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 released
DevTeam worked hard for the last several hours and released jailbreak tool for iOS 4.2.1. It is redsn0w 0.9.6 b4.
As usual we remind all ultrasn0w unlockers please stay away from this official firmware. Wait for the ability to create custom 4.2.1 IPSWs that don’t update your baseband!
New redsn0w 0.9.6 b4 uses limera1n exploit and will successfully jailbreak all devices. The only problem is that it is a tethered jailbreak, which means you will have to plug it to a computer and rerun redsn0w on every reboot. This so called tethered or semi-tethered jailbreak. This condition applies to iPhone 3GS (new bootrom), iPhone 4, iPad, iPod touch 2G (MC model), iPod touch 3G and iPod touch 4G. Hackers are working hard to create untethered jailbreak for these devices. To use future untethered jailbreak you need to save SHSH keys for iOS 4.1 using
Old devices like iPhone 3GS (old bootrom), iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G (non-MC model) can be jailbroken-untethered right now using this latest version of RedSn0w.
You can download RedSn0w 0.9.6 b4 here.

Jailbreak iOS 4.2: what can we expect?
Next iPhone/iPod/iPad firmare iOS 4.2 is due out soon. What can we expect in terms of jailbreaking 4.2?
Limera1n exploit for 4.2 in most cases is a tethered jailbreak. That means if you have to reboot your device, it will show a "connect to itunes" logo until you run the jailbreak software again.
- iPhone 3G - will run 4.2 untethered. Redsn0w will be updated.
- iPhone 3GS - old bootrom will run 4.2 untethered if done via Pwnagetool while updating from 4.1. Otherwise it will be tethered.
- iPhone 4 - tethered
- iPod 2G - untethered.
- iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 4G - tethered
- iPad - tethered.
Tethered jailbreak isn’t that bad for iPads and iPods. But if something happens and your iphone reboots while you’re away from your computer, you cant use the device until you get home and run some tool on your computer again.
We suggest not updating until new expoit will be implemented in new utility.
The community is working on a solution to this to either make the jailbreak untethered or at least semi-tethered. Semi-tethered means the device will at least reboot, but unjailbroken while on the road until you return to your computer.

DevTeam found a way to jailbreak all firmwares of Apple devices with A4 chip
The iPhone DevTeam have probably found a new method to jailbreak Apple devices with the A4 chip. This includes such devices as iPhone, iPad, iPod and Apple TV. This is great news!
MuscleNerd tweeted.
Think we've figured out a way to extend PwnageTool+limera1n+@comex hacks to untethered JBs for all future A4 firmwares
Geohot May Stop Producing His Tools for iPhone
Last Geohot's post on his blog reveals that he will not release any new tool for jailbreak or unlock in the near future. Moreover, he said that he misses those old days, when jailbreaking was a hard work to do:
“...Sorry, this post was probably a bad idea. Next time I won’t say anything. I miss when this blog was actually about technical things (I’ve been reacting too much to the feedback, which led it to the place it’s in now). I didn’t fully realize most of the current scene don’t care unless they are getting something. Now I do. It’s late tonight, I’ll think about what to do about this in the morning.
