iPad OS 4.2 'Orientation Lock' to 'Mute Switch' Change Permanent

1

Before iPad was released, Apple had announced that the hardware switch on the side of the iPad would be a mute switch, just like on the iPhone. But in March the company changed its plans. In new iOS 4.2, expected to be released in November, the orientation-lock button will be transformed again into a mute-switch. The Complete Transcript of Steve Jobs' Apple Q4 Earnings Call

Here's the Apple CEO in his own words talking during Apple Q4 Earnings Call:

Hi, everybody. As most of you know, I don’t usually participate in Apple earnings calls, since you’re all in such capable hands with Peter and Tim. But I just couldn’t help dropping by for our first 20-billion-dollar quarter. I’d like to chat about a few things, and then stay for the rest of the Q&A, if that’s all right.

First, let me discuss iPhone. We sold 14.1 million iPhones in the quarter, which represents a 91 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter, and was well ahead of IDC’s latest published estimate of 64 percent growth for the global smartphone market in the September quarter. And it handily beats RIM’s 12.1 million BlackBerrys sold, in their most recent quarter ending in August.

motorolas-complaint

Last week Motorola filed another complaint in a U.S. District Court in Delaware. Current company's approach is to invalidate 11 patents that were awarded to NeXT Software and Apple (which are both known to be founded by Steve Jobs).

It is said in Motorola's suit that these patents were named in Apple's complaints against HTC and other handset makers that use Google's Android OS in their smartphones. That explains why company wants to prove that these patents are invalid.

Here is the list of the patents that were named in the lawsuit:

Apple released iOS 4.2 Beta 1 for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch

Apple has just released the official iOS 4.2 beta 1 builds for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. This is beta and is for developers only. The final version is planned for this November.

Here is a quick summary of some of the changes:

  • AirPlay, which takes AirTunes to another level with streaming video and pictures, and should let us beam content from iPhone or iPod touch to the new Apple TV.
  • Find text on web page, finally. In Safari, easily search for and highlight specific words and phrases.
  • And finally iOS 4 features for the iPad (multitasking, folders, etc).

Here is a quick comment from Apple about iOS 4.2 for iPad:

New Survey Reveals That iPhone 3GS Drops Calls More Often Than iPhone 4

changewave-antennaissue

Today ChangeWave Research revealed the results of its survey on iPhone 4. 213 new handset owners were questioned in a few weeks after the launch of the latest Apple's smartphone, between July 19 and 28. Here is a list of facts that were revealed:

  • In June 6.3% of iPhone 3GS owners experienced dropped calls, in July only 5.2% of those who use iPhone 4 had dropped a call at least once. ChangeWave Research's vice president Paul Carton says that means that iPhone 4 is quiet better at making calls:
  • "Despite all of the issues surrounding the antenna, in actuality iPhone 4 owners reported experiencing fewer dropped calls on the average than iPhone 3GS owners".
