Apple ditches integrated iPhone SIM-card plans?

embeded SIM

The Telegraph reports that European carriers forced Apple to abandon their plans to introduce integrated SIM-cards in future iPhone handsets. Well it looks like Apple got a little worried over the European carrier’s threats. Carriers recently accused Apple in trying to gain control of carriers’ relationship with their mobile customers, because such built-in SIM card allows customers to switch between operators easily, sign up for mobile service on Apple’s website without having to call a carrier or visit a store. Obviously, nothing has been confirmed, and, doubtfully, will be. Perhaps, Apple will announce their avoidance of implementing an integrated SIM in future iPhone handsets or may be they won’t.

European carriers threaten Apple over embedded SIM option

SIM free iphone

As reported, Apple is developing a built-in SIM card for the Phone. Such embedded SIM card allows users to activate their devices with a broad array of carriers. Moreover, with such card, customers could insist on shorter-term contracts, using the ability to easily switch between carriers as leverage. So, some European carriers (Vodafone in the UK, France Telecom and Telefónica in Spain) are threatening Apple to withhold their iPhone subsidies if the company deploys the technology on the iPhone. Apple was accused in gain control of carriers’ relationship with their mobile customers. This technology allows customers to sign up for mobile service directly on Apple's website. It could allow customers to switch more easily from one to another and even lead to a "war" between operators and Apple. As estimated, Apple’s global iPhone sales could take a 12 percent hit if European carriers carried out their threats.

china-apple

Katy Huberty, who is a well-known analyst at Morgan Stanley, posted a new report, where she notes that China is a potential growth driver for Apple, but the fact still remains unappreciated by Apple's investors.

"...Despite steady upturn since February 2009, we continue to believe investors underappreciate the AAPL growth story, which is driven by one, iPhone market share gains and expanded distribution; two, the iPad market opportunity; three, rising enterprise adoption, and four, the Chinese consumer."

Google founders considered hiring Jobs as their company's CEO

googlers

New episode from the "Bloomberg Game Changers" (which is a Bloomberg documentary series) revealed an interesting moment in the history of relationship between Google and Apple. When Sergey Brin and Larry Page were looking for Google's first CEO, they considered hiring their personal "hero" Steve Jobs. They even asked their investor John Doerr:

"Why can't he be our CEO?"

Eventually in 2001 Eric Shmidt was hired as the CEO by Brin and Page. Later Schmidt was also serving on Apple's board of directors until he resigned in 2009 because of the increased competition between Apple and Google, as the latter entered the mobile operating systems market by introducing Android.

The whole episode of the Bloomberg series about Brin and Page is available here.

Apple may be planning to build the second data center in North Carolina

DataCenters-Flickr

According to a new report from All Things Digital, two new photos were revealed on the Flickr page of the Catawba County that show two renderings of Apple's site in Maiden, North Carolina - one of them is an existing facility and another one, which is labeled as "Phase 2", has two seemingly identical buildings.  It leads to an idea that Apple may have been planning to build another data center, but it remains unknown why the company still hasn't reported anything on such plans.

Rumors on the second Apple's data center site aroused last week when All Things Digital cited some anonymous sources and reported that Apple was examining the suggestion to double its operations in Maiden to 500,000 square-feet. As you may know, the data center in North Carolina is almost five times larger than Apple's current data center situated in Newark, California. It was also announced to be "fully operational" by Data Center Knowledge last Sunday, and Apple revealed it will be opened "any day now".
