There is no unthethered jailbreak for new iPhone 3GS bootroms and iOS 4.2.1 yet, so you should stay at iOS 4.1.
Important: iPhone3GS users with old bootroms who want to go to 4.2.1 and unlock should not use this PwnageTool! Update to stock 4.2.1 first, then use new redsn0w to update your baseband.
Step One
Make a folder called "Pwnage" on the desktop. Download a couple of things:

Today Apple released patches for its iOS that address a security hole in Mobile Safari, which allowed users to jailbreak their iDevices. The PDF exploit they used also allowed hackers to gain remote control over the device with an iOS.
You can update your device via the links above or simply by connecting your device to iTunes and clicking Update. But note, if you want to continue using jailbreak you should not update your handset/tablet and don't forget to backup your SHSH blobs.

An unknown group of hackers work now on bringing current beta version of iPhone OS 4 to the iPhone 2G (that was released in 2007). As you remember, Steve Jobs mentioned on his iPhone OS 4 keynote that the system won't be supported by iPhone 2G due to its low memory and processing power. Hackers also explained what they are working on:
"We are rewriting the 4.0 beta firmware released by Apple to create a custom firmware that can run on devices iPhone 2G which is no longer available. To do this we studied the architecture of the firmware previously released by Apple on the device trying to understand how is it different from the released versions on other devices, in particular that of the iPhone 3G device, which is what most resembles the smartphones".
According to a shady photo above they've already reached success but still there is no relevant information revealed on their site.
iPhone developer Pandav informed MacRumors that they, thanks to the scripts of statistics included in their application, have managed to record tracks for a new iPhone model, not yet released.
PinchMedia, which offers a system of statistics and analysis on the use of software, has noticed the same thing and the new device is identified with the code iPhone3,1. The last iPhone released to the public was the iPhone 3GS which carries the identification string iPhone2,1. Apple similarly began testing the iPhone 3GS (iPhone2,1) back in October of 2008 about 8 months ahead of its launch.
The next generation iPhone might include a multi-core processor and Verizon compatibility. It might be released as early as mid 2010.
Some users of the forum MacTalk.com.au have examined the latest version of the iPhone SDK 3.0 and have found the icons of all iPhone models. Each of these can be easily recognized. There is "iPhone1, 1" (representing the model EDGE), "iPhone1, 2" (the current 3G) and "iPhone2, 1" which represents a future iPhone models.
As you can see, the icon of iPhone2, 1 is completely identical to that of the 3G model which differs from the EDGE. However these images cannot prove that the next model of iPhone will be completely identical (in appearance) to 3G.
This is a new concept for the next iPhone model called iPhone video. It has very few differences in appearance (which makes it one of the most plausible concept that we have ever seen). The main feature is the front camera with support for iChat Video. The designers from Macpredictions have also assumed the interface of iChat Video:
