Apple Wants to Acquire ARM Holdings?

arm-processor

This Wednesday London Evening Standard posted an article about supposed acquisition of ARM Holdings by Apple. According to the source:

"Apple is ARM's biggest customer and speculation is that the iPad maker wants to take chip design in house."

With a reference to an unknown trader it is claimed that with such a deal Apple could stop ARM from delivering its technology to everyone else's devices. That looks convenient. But we were not sure if it is a rumor or not, so we waited for a while for further information.

iPad Supports Dvorak keyboards

dvorak ipad

For some time people interested in the iPad's tech specs were wondering where the Dvorak keyboard support is. With iPhone SDK 3.2 Beta 5 released on Tuesday developers finally found it. But on the evidence above it is clear that there is a hardware support, but not software (so you can connect external keyboard, but there is still no way to change iPad layout to Dvorak's).

It is interesting that though the hardware support is developed, there are no Bluetooth Dvorak keyboards produced at the moment to connect to the iPad (on the other hand you can always take usual keyboard and apply stickers to its keys).

To know more about Dvorak keyboard layour read here.

Apple Explained New iBooks features

iBooks Landscape mode

New page featuring iBooks for iPad has been rolled out on the Apple's official site. The app will be available as soon as the new device will be launched (the official date is April 3rd). Apple confirms iBooks will use the open ePub standard and the same version of FairPlay DRM that continues to be applied on video content distributed via iTunes.

iBooks will allow users to switch portrait and landscape modes, change fonts and text sizes and even tap on words to see its definition from Wikipedia or built-in dictionary. It is compatible with VoiceOver functionality that makes content to be read aloud automatically.

For some time iBooks will be available only in USA, but as we know Apple already seeks for professionals to expand their book business internationally.

Yahoo and Wikipedia search coming to an iPhone/iPad/iPod

Wiki-search-safari
(different search engine strings on SDK on the left, Firefox 3.6 for Mac on the right)

Here's some more interesting information from the iPhone OS 3.2 SDK. Users will be able to set search to something besides Google in the search bar of the iPad's Safari in upcoming iPhoneOS releases.

Right now, the two options besides the current default Google are Wikipedia and Yahoo, but plugins could be developed to do things like Amazon and Bing searches directly from the search bar in the Safari browser.

There is even a suggestion manager for both Google and Yahoo depending on which search engine you choose. Unfortunately, no Bing… yet.

Speaking About Reasons of Apple's Actions

Jobs_gladiator

After the news about Apple's lawsuit many of us have been wondering why Apple did this. Obviously, the thing is not about money as the company already has $40 billion of cash and investments. Digital Daily's editor John Paczkowski thinks the reason is a desire to extend iPhone's growing lead on the market.

"Apple is suing to make an example out of HTC and lengthen the engineering time-to-market for Android handset builders."

While other Android smartphone manufacturers will spend their time solving a problem with developing of noninfringing technologies to avoid lawsuits, Apple will continue to iterate the iPhone.

Ok, this is clear, but why Apple accused HTC now?

New iPhone Worm Wants User's Bank Passwords

apple_worm

A second iPhone worm virus has been found by security company F-Secure. It is specifically targeting people in the Netherlands who are using their iPhones for internet banking with Dutch online bank ING.

It redirects the bank's customers to a site with a log-in screen (phishing). The worm attacks "jailbroken" phones - a modification which enables the user to run non-Apple approved software on their handset. Only handsets with installed SSH (secure shell) are at risk. SSH is a file-transfer program that enables users to remotely connect to their phones. It comes with a default password, 'alpine' which should be changed.

Here is a tutorial how to change the default SSH password and minimize the risk.

Action Menu: Add New features to iPhone's Copy / Paste [Cydia]

Action Menu is a new utility that extends traditional Copy / Paste functionality. You can now "Copy All" or add text to a stack ("Favorites") that allows you to paste phrases frequently at any time and in any application.

IMG_0038 IMG_0039 IMG_0040

The application is free but you can also buy an extension pack (costs $2.99) which will add new features, such as:

  • History: keep the history of all copied sentences / words / numbers;
  • Lookup: find online matches for phone numbers and words, using Google Search, Wikipedia, Dictionary, and Google Translate;
  • Tweet: send selected text through a Twitter client installed on your iPhone (currently support Tweetie, Twitterific, Twittelator and TwitterFon).

We found this utility quite useful. It can be installed via Cydia on a jailbreaked iPhone (iPod Touch).

Windows 95 and Windows XP on iPhone [Video]

win95

Russian iphone user iWert was anle to run Windows 95 and even Windows XP on iPhone. He used Bochs (pronounced "box"), which is a portable x86 and x86-64 IBM PC compatible emulator (wikipedia link).

iPhone hardware is not made to run Windows on an emuator. So Windows 95 runs, but a bit slow. It takes 5 minutes to start.

Windows XP almost did it, but failed to start:

3D Realm: Prey coming to the iPhone

prey5

3D Realms has announced that their 2006 first-person shooter, Prey, is coming to the iPhone. The preview looks impressive. The texture work is fantastic, the gravity-defying puzzles that helped the original game stand out as an above-average shooter are back as well.
