Apple Pulls iAds From Kid-Focused Apps as Advertisers Target Efforts

MacStories posted a message from one App Store developer who recently saw the iAd fill rate for his Dex application for iOS drop to zero. He asked Apple and received the following answer:

We periodically review the apps in the iAd Network to ensure that all apps receiving ads are aligned with the needs of our advertisers. Currently, our advertisers prefer that their advertising not appear in applications that are targeted for users that are young children, since their products are not targeted at that audience.

Newspaper thinktank predicted the iPad in 1994

In 2007 the Paleofuture blog posted the video below, where Roger Fidler and his team at Knight-Ridder describe an electronic newspaper running on what might as well be an iPad. But the video was shot in 1994.

"We may still use computers to create information, but we will use the tablet to interact with print, video and other information," the video explains. It also goes on to describe personal "profile pages," "interactive maps" and sharing links with friends. It even seems like Fidler is channeling Steve Jobs at some points, saying "Nobody needs a manual for their daily newspaper".  Amazingly, he even seems to describe iAds.

Apple Officially Responds On Location Tracking Issue

After a week of discussions around the discovery that the iPhone has an inbuilt algorithm of keeping track of users' locations in unencrypted file, Apple finally shed light on the subject.

Before we repost the company's official statement, here is a short summary. Apple says it's not tracking the location of iPhone users. It maintains a database of celltowers and Wi-Fi hotspots that allows to calculate your location when requested much more quickly than it can be made with the help of GPS only. The location data is being sent to Apple in anonymous form, and users' iPhones download only the necessary part of the database.

iAd Gallery Violates Apple’s Own Guidelines

A couple days ago Apple released its own application for showcasing the best iAd advertisements. Noteworthy that iAd Gallery have already caused debates on the Internet about it features set that is rather limited. The Gallery only lets users to browse different iAd campaigns. Simply said, it’s a free iAd collection for iPhone. Dan Frommer at Silicon Alley Insider noted that iAd Gallery may be violating Apple’s own guidelines for iOS apps and should have been rejected by Apple itself. In the 2.13 section of the guidelines, the company explains:

Apps that are primarily marketing materials or advertisements will be rejected.

iAd Gallery indeed is based on marketing materials. The truth is, of course Apple won’t reject its own app even if it violates one of the Guidelines.

The iAd Gallery gives you easy access to a selection of the fun and informative ads that have run in some of your favorite apps. Use the Browse feature to discover ads you haven’t seen, or to find those you want to see again. Even lets you tag your favorites to a Loved section that’s all your own.

Apple Asks Toyota to Pull Jailbreak Ad Campaign

Apple reportedly asked Toyota to remove from Cydia its exclusive theme created by Toyota's advertising company Velti for promotion of its new vehicle and available for jailbroken iPhones.

Scion, a brand of vehicles manufactured by Toyota, recently developed a custom iPhone theme specifically for jailbroken devices, submitting it to us for hosting in Cydia.

As far as we know, Apple is strongly against jailbroken devices but this advertising campaign may somehow help to legitimize the jailbreak community and also place it in direct competition with Apple's own iAds network. Apple apparently heard about the campaign and has asked Toyota to pull it.

Apple Attracts Smaller Companies To Its iAd Network

Those companies that want to buy interactive ads on Apple's iAd network may rejoice - Apple has lowered the minimum advertising buy from $1 million to $500,000.

John Paczkowski of Digital Daily says in this way Apple wants to broaden its platform and attract smaller companies who are interested in advertising of their products on Apple's network.

Apple Seeds iOS 4.3 Beta 3 to Developers

Apple released on Tuesday, two weeks after previous update, a third beta version of iOS 4.3 for the iPad, iPhone 4 and 3GS, and third- and fourth-generation iPod touch, to developers. The build carries the number of 8F5166b. The iOS 4.3 beta 3 now allow users to cancel downloading apps and delete them mid-download. The feature would be useful for users who accidentally begin downloading a large application and wish to cancel the process. Remind you that the iOS 4.3 is expected to introduce a rather small set of new features:  AirPlay video streaming for third-party apps, HTTP live streaming statistics and full-screen iAds. In the developer betas Apple also enabled support for multitasking gestures on the iPad, although the feature won’t be part of the public release of iOS 4.3.

Japanese Publishers Accuse Apple in Illegal Distribution of Their Content

According to the Wall Street Journal, yesterday the Japan Book Publishers Association, the Electronic Book Publishers Association of Japan, the Japan Magazine Publishers Association and Digital Comic Association issued a joint press release, where Apple's content is called as infringing and "illegal". Particularly, the works well-known Japanese authors Keigo Higashimo and Haruki Murakami were mentioned as illegally scanned and distributed via the App Store.

“The associations we represent believe that Apple bears grave responsibility for this problem".

Apple allegedly paid over $1M for iAd trademark

As you may remember, in April 2010 Apple announced its iAd advertising program. Shortly after that Innovate Media Group LLC filed a lawsuit against Apple, accusing it of unfair competition and trademark infringement. The history of Innovate Media reveals that the company has been also producing "iAds" - online video ads - in 2006, and in 2007 the respective trademark was filed.

Steve Jobs is responsible for the canceling of a $10 million iAd deal

Apple’s CEO was personally responsible for the recent canceling of a $10 million iAd campaign. Steve Jobs wasn’t satisfied with the direction Adidas was taking with its advertising concept. After third rejection of the campaign concept, Adidas pulled out of $10 million iAd deal.

The reason behind the cancellation was Steve Jobs being a “control freak”. Apple, unlike other mobile advertising providers, controls the entire advertising process with its iAd program. While Apple has insisted this has more to do with the quality of the end product, it has definitely caused some problems for advertisers.

Owner of location-based advertising patent targets Apple's iAds



1Apple and its  iAds mobile advertising service are the target of a new lawsuit from a company that owns a patent related to location-based ads. Apple was named in the lawsuit from StreetSpace, along with Quattro Wireless, which is now being phased out in favor of iAds. Other defendants include Google, AdMob, Nokia, Navteq, Millenial Media and Jumptap.

StreetSpace is the creator of a remote Internet terminal the Web Station. Users can walk up to one of these terminals to access the Internet, and are delivered targeted advertisements in the process. The suit alleges that iAds service, launched on July 1, is in violation of StreetSpace patent because it delivers personalized advertisements based on a user's location, profile and usage history.

Related to that invention is U.S. Patent No. 6,847,969, which StreetSpace has alleged Apple is in violation of. Named "Method and System for Providing Personalized Online Services and Advertisements in Public Spaces," it was granted on Jan. 25, 2005.
