Jailbreak & Unlock tutorials and FAQ
UPDATE: Apple released new iOS versions and has stopped signing all other firmwares, including iOS 6.1.2 and iOS 5.1.1. This means you can NOT restore to 6.1.2/5.1.1/4.3.3 and others any more (both original and custom), unless you have saved your SHSH keys for it.
If you have decided to perform an untethered jailbreak and unlock, you need to get the following information:
- What type of device do you have (iPhone 3G/3GS/4, iPod Touch 3G/4G, iPad 1/2, Apple TV)?
- Do you need unlock (if your iPhone locked to one carrier and you want to use it with another)?
The answer is NO, if the device is not iPhone, if it was purchased as factory unlocked and can be used with any cellular carrier (f.e. in Canada, France, etc).
If the answer is YES, you need to find out your modem version (Setting-General-About-Modem). - What firmware version do you have? Take a look at Setting-General-About-Version. For example it could be iOS 4.3.3.
- What operating system do you use on your desktop (Windows, Mac OS)?
How to perform jailbreak, when you do NOT need an unlock
For iPhone 3G the latest is iOS 4.2.1. You can perform jailbreak with any utility. For iOS 4.2.1 you can also use them or GreenPois0n (Windows, Mac OS).

DevTeam released RedSn0w 0.9.8b7
The iPhone Dev-Team recently released RedSn0w 0.9.8b7 which brings explicit support for a tethered 4.3.5 jailbreak as well as new iOS 5.0b6 iPad 1 jailbreak:
Apple updated the iPad1 iOS5b6 IPSW without changing its version number or filename, so we're releasing redsn0w 0.9.8b7 to handle both the original and changed IPSW. We've also added explicit support for a tethered 4.3.5/4.2.10 jailbreak (instead of pointing at the 4.3.4/4.2.9 IPSWs) and fixed a 4.2.10 problem.
You can download RedSn0w 0.9.8b7 here.

RedSn0w can jailbreak iOS 4.3.5
RedSn0w can perform a tethered jailbreak on iOS 4.3.5 for all devices except the iPad 2, according to MuscleNerd's tweet:
So those who really do want tethered 4.3.5 can use redsn0w pointed at 4.3.4 (except iPad2)
We strongly recommend NOT to update to iOS 4.3.4 or iOS 4.3.5 to preserve untethered jailbreak. We will soon post step-by-step tutorials on how to perform iOS 4.3.5 tethered jailbreak.

Sn0wBreeze 2.5 released: untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.1
ih8sn0w released Sn0wBreeze 2.5 - utility to untether jailbreak iOS 4.3 for Windows. It uses the same method as Redsn0w 0.9.6 rc9 and Pwnagetool 4.3.
Sn0wbreeze also preserves your baseband, which is very useful for unlockers. That is why it is so-called Pwnagetool for Windows. With Sn0wbreeze you can update to firmware iOS 4.3.1, while preserve old unlockable baseband. It also works with iPhone 3GS with 06.15 baseband.
Sn0wBreeze 2.5 does not support iPhone 4 Verizon and iPad 2.
You can download Sn0wBreeze 2.5 for Windows here.
Step-by-step Tutorial: jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 on iPhone/iPod/iPad using PwnageTool 4.2 (Mac OS)
UPDate: Attention! We've received info, that Apple stopped signing iOS 4.2 for devices for which iOS 4.3 is available. This means you will not be able to restore to 4.2.1 without saved SHSH keys.
UPDATE: Please, consider reading our Jailbreak & Unlock FAQ, especially if you have questions or troubles.
Using this tutorial you will be able to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 running on iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 4G and iPad. Pwnagetool will also preserve baseband version if you need carrier unlock. If you have updated the baseband to version 06.15, you can use this tutorial. This tutorial uses PwnageTool 4.2 for Mac OS X.
We are not developers of jailbreak utilities, so we cannot assure that everything will work just fine. However we tried this tutorial on several devices and succeeded.
We will use iPhone 4 in our jailbreak tutorial. The process is the same for all devices.
Step One
Make a folder called "Pwnage" on the desktop. Download a couple of things:

Is Rubyra1n Geohot’s Next Jailbreak Tool?
May be soon we will jailbreak our devices with a new tool from George Hotz (better known as Geohot) called Rubyra1n. On March 27, 2010 George Hotz registered two domains limera1n.com and blackra1n.com, another jailbreak tool Hotz released last year. The new rubyra1n, however, doesn’t share the same data with limera1n.com — an app released in October to jailbreak iOS 4.1. Geohot doesn’t comment these rumors anyhow, but we, obviously, wouldn’t be surprised at all to see him coming out with his own iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak for all devices.
Jailbreak iOS 4.2: what can we expect?
Next iPhone/iPod/iPad firmare iOS 4.2 is due out soon. What can we expect in terms of jailbreaking 4.2?
Limera1n exploit for 4.2 in most cases is a tethered jailbreak. That means if you have to reboot your device, it will show a "connect to itunes" logo until you run the jailbreak software again.
- iPhone 3G - will run 4.2 untethered. Redsn0w will be updated.
- iPhone 3GS - old bootrom will run 4.2 untethered if done via Pwnagetool while updating from 4.1. Otherwise it will be tethered.
- iPhone 4 - tethered
- iPod 2G - untethered.
- iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 4G - tethered
- iPad - tethered.
Tethered jailbreak isn’t that bad for iPads and iPods. But if something happens and your iphone reboots while you’re away from your computer, you cant use the device until you get home and run some tool on your computer again.
We suggest not updating until new expoit will be implemented in new utility.
The community is working on a solution to this to either make the jailbreak untethered or at least semi-tethered. Semi-tethered means the device will at least reboot, but unjailbroken while on the road until you return to your computer.

Jailbreak iOS 4.1 with RedSn0w 0.9.6 b1 is now available for Windows
RedSn0w 0.9.6 b1 for Mac OS X was released a while ago. Today DevTeam created a version for Windows users. RedSn0w 0.9.6 b1 can jailbreak iOS 4.1 and iOS 4.1 running on iPhone 3G or iPod touch 2G.
You can download it here.
Redsn0w is easy to use:
- Download firmware here.
- Launch redsn0w 0.9.6 b1
- Select your stock 4.1 or 4.0 ipsw (you’ve already used this to update your device to 4.1 or 4.0)
- Select “Install Cydia” and any of the other options shown above, then click “Next”. Use DFU mode to install the jailbreak.
This is still beta, so there might be some problems:
Any Windows users seeing “Waiting for reboot” for too long (more than 20 seconds or so), please try “shaking” the JB process by unplugging then replugging your USB cable (while letting redsn0w continue to run). Also, try using a USB port “closer” to your computer (as opposed to on your monitor or behind another hub).
As usual DevTeam reminds us:
IF YOU USE THE ULTRASN0W UNLOCK, PLEASE WAIT FOR PWNAGETOOL TO SUPPORT 4.1. DO NOT USE REDSN0W
That’s because to use redsn0w at 4.1, you need to already have updated to official 4.1 from Apple. If you do that, you lose the ultrasn0w unlock (possibly forever).
