Mac App Store Reportedly Set to Launch Today

According to The Loop, Apple is planning to launch the Mac App Store at 12:00 pm (noon) ET on Thursday. That puts it at about 9:00 am PT where Apple is headquartered in Cupertino, California. The Mac App Store lets you browse new and noteworthy apps, find out what’s hot, view staff favorites, search categories and read customer ratings and reviews. You can purchase, download and install apps in just one click and start using them immediately like on the App Store. The Mac App Store will be available to Mac OS X Snow Leopard users as a free download through Software Update. Purchased apps can run on all of your personal Macs and updates are delivered directly through the Mac App Store.

Apple Releases Updates to GarageBand and iMovie

Apple may update Final Cut Studio in March

Yesterday French site HardMac reported that Final Cut Studio along with Final Cut Pro will presumably receive an update in March or at the beginning of April. It was noticed that the new software will be a "substantial update when compared to the previous version", though it is possible it won't have new features expected by "Pro" users.

"Two versions are already running at beta level, one for Snow Leopard, and one for Lion. Some new features will only be available on Lion's version, due to the changes made on QuickTime layer."

Skype Video Calling for iOS over Wi-Fi and 3G Now Available



As expected, Skype unleashed version 3.0 of the Skype App for iOS. An update allows iOS Skype users make Skype to Skype video calls over WiFi and 3G. The new video conferencing feature works between capable iOS devices as well as desktop machines. Two-way video calls are only supported on the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and fourth-generation iPod touch, while iPad and third-generation iPod touch users can receive video calls. Users can make video calls in portrait or landscape mode. Skype video calling requires iOS 4.0 or above.

WikiLeaks App Has Appeared in App Store

New app in the App Store has appeared. It is called WikiLeaks App and gives an access to WikiLeaks archives and tweets related to the site's activity. The interface is pretty nice and clean and formatted for iPhone and iPad.

Features list includes automatic forwarding to actual mirror, full access to website's materials including CableGate and tweets with #wikileaks hashtag and those that mention @wikileaks.

Untethered iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak for iPhone 4 next week



MuscleNerd from iPhone DevTeam tweeted that an untethered jailbreak solution for iOS 4.2.1 will be released soon, probably next week.

The iPad-only Publication 'Daily' Is Rumored To Debut On Jan.17

Yesterday Peter Kafka from MediaMemo had reported that according to multiple sources the News Corp's newspaper Daily will be launched on Jan. 17. He added that previously the launch date was shifted several times, but the reported date is a "much safer bet".

Rumor has it the Daily will cost only $0.99 per week and will be updated every day. The publication will be only available for Apple's iPad and include multimedia features like "some kind of 3-D effect that lots of people are very excited about".

Apple Will Open Its Mac App Store On Jan. 6 In 90 Countries

Yesterday Apple revealed that its Mac App Store will be opened on Jan. 6, 2011.

New App Store will offer both paid and free applications for Mac OS X Snow Leopard in such categories as Utilities, Productivity, Lifestyle, and Graphics & Design. Steve Jobs also told it will be available in ninety countries at launch.

"The App Store revolutionized mobile apps. We hope to do the same for PC apps with the Mac App Store by making finding and buying PC apps easy and fun. We can't wait to get started on January 6".

Apple issues Apple TV update

Yesterday Apple released a software update 4.2.1 for the second-generation Apple TV to address resolution problem caused by incorrect displaying of content and downloading issue that may cause a movie o TV show to be re-downloaded.  Some users noticed that the update might resolve also flickering issue. Some of users used a HDMI to DVI cable to watch the Apple TV content and after the update, the flickering was gone. Though, other users found that the update doesn't resolve their issues.

US Army wants to equip all soldiers with an Apple iPhone or Android phone

The U.S. Army seems to indent to equip its soldiers with a smartphone making it a standard piece of soldier’s equipment. Soldiers will be given opportunity to choose between Apple's iPhone or one running Google Android. The Army is even going to pay the soldier's monthly phone bill. Army – issued smartphones are already used for different purposes but now it id interested in deploying handsets in war zones. The idea is to make it easier for soldiers to access data and receive updates on the go, no matter where they are.

Apple disabled jailbreak detection API in iOS 4.2

Apple has reportedly disabled its jailbreak detection API through iOS 4.2 software update. The API helped third-party mobile device management (MDM) applications to check for unauthorized modifications of system files. Apple's jailbreak detection API provided MDM applications direct access to iOS system information and was able to ask the operating system directly if it had been jailbroken. Jailbreak exploits typically change a number of operating system files, and exploit one or another low-level OS features to let users directly load their own or third-party applications.

Apple updates MacBook Air firmware to address display issue

On Wednesday Apple released a MacBook Air EFI firmware update 2.0 to resolve issue with display. The update is recommended for all new 11-inch and 13-inch MacBook Air models and requires Mac OS X 10.6.5. It addresses problems where the MacBook Air is unresponsive or displays just a black screen after booting or waking. Despite scattered reports of issues with the MacBook Air, the laptop has continued to sell well, especially the 11-inch model. Analysts tracking retail activity on Black Friday found that the 11-inch MacBook Air was "flying off the shelves" and a "customer favorite."
