Geohot May Stop Producing His Tools for iPhone

iphone4_jailbrake

Last Geohot's post on his blog reveals that he will not release any new tool for jailbreak or unlock in the near future. Moreover, he said that he misses those old days, when jailbreaking was a hard work to do:

“...Sorry, this post was probably a bad idea. Next time I won’t say anything. I miss when this blog was actually about technical things (I’ve been reacting too much to the feedback, which led it to the place it’s in now). I didn’t fully realize most of the current scene don’t care unless they are getting something. Now I do. It’s late tonight, I’ll think about what to do about this in the morning.

Lenovo’s CEO: Steve Jobs is a genius

iPhone_in_China

Recently the head of Lenovo Liu Chuanzhi gave an interesting interview to Financial Times, where he said that Apple loses out in China:

"We are lucky that Steve Jobs has such a bad temper and doesn't care about China. If Apple were to spend the same effort on the Chinese consumer as we do, we would be in trouble".

Currently Lenovo holds about 30% of Chinese technology market, which is expected to be the #1 biggest market in a year. Apple, on the contrary, limits the number of products shipped to that country. There are only a few of its authorized resellers and stores situated in the largest cities of China.

Cheap Solutions for the Signal Problem

rubberwristband

Some people think that Apple should be handing out free cases to keep its loyal customers from going on a strike. But no such thing happens, and most users are stuck with the only official solution to spend $30 on a bumper for their iPhone. However, what you need is just a little ingenuity.

iPhone 4 has been successfully hacked (jailbroken)

Congratulations to all iPhone users. iPhone 4 has been successfully jailbroken. iPhone hackers @planetbeing and @chpwn has managed to get root access on the device using @comex’s userland jailbreak method. However do not expect new jailbreak utility soon. @p0sixninja has confirmed that it cant be released in its current shape because it contains some of Apple’s proprietary code:

@i_Enthusiast the jailbreak shown is a more of a stepping stone for us, it can’t be released because it includes some of apples software

You should not expect the carrier unlock soon too. This is because iPhone 4 uses a new baseband OS, which will require a complete rewrite for ultrasn0w unlocking tool:

The cost of iPhone 4 Compared to Top Smartphones

iphone4-evo4g-incredible

The prices for the iPhone 4, Droid Incredible, Evo 4G and Nexus One are very similar. But in this chart you can see how much you’ll have to spend on each of the devices during a 2-year period.

The results for the iPhone 4 are quite encouraging, especially in the Minimum Plan Total Cost category. However, you should remember that nowadays AT&T is the only carrier that offers tiered data. This means that for $2,000 you can only enjoy 200 MB a month, which doesn’t exactly compare to the unlimited plans of the other 3 devices. With the “unlimited” plan you’ll be able to use 2GB, which is enough in most cases. If it isn’t, be ready to spill out an extra $10 per 1GB each month.

Still, the performances of all the 4 devices are really very close, so you can do some research while waiting for the iPhone 4 to come into the market.

Launches of iPhone 4 in U.K., France, Germany and U.S.

035157-RAS3034_800

In spite of the problems with ordering and receiving, the iPhone 4 has enjoyed a really successful launch across the world. The first place for the iPhone 4 to go on sale was Japan, with more than 300 people lining up at the main store for Softbank, the mobile carrier for the iPhone 4 in Japan. By early afternoon all the devices in stock had been sold.

The next countries to launch the new device were Germany, France and the UK, with the U.S. East coast following them shortly afterwards. At most of the places the lines were incredibly long – actually the longest for any iPhone release.

FaceTime Will Not Use Carrier Minutes

facetime-100607-1

Good news for those who thought that FaceTime feature may spend your carrier minutes. Yesterday Apple representative told BusinessInsider that it is not true:

"The voice call ends as soon as the FaceTime call connects. The FaceTime call is over Wi-Fi so does not use carrier minutes."

That really wasn't so obvious because there was a possibility that voice call would keep running in the background in cases if Wi-Fi signal went out or video chat dropped.

The reason why FaceTime feature doesn't work in 3G networks is that it is not decided how exactly such videocalls must be billed - as data toward monthly data caps or in some other way.

LUXA2 H4: Elegant Apple iPad Holder

Thermaltake Technology company has a devision called LUXA2, which has many interesting luxury products. The recent interesting one is LUXA2 H4 - the Apple iPad solid-aluminum holder.

The holder looks really nice and is well manufactured. The main material is aluminum. The design is great and reminds us different Apple products, especially the iMac stand. LUXA2 H4 holds the iPad with two short and two V-shaped arms, that have six rubber nubs. The nubs tightly grip the iPad without scratching it. The user is able to adjust the width of the stand by pulling these arms. That's why LUXA2 H4 fits not only for the iPad, but can hold Amazon Kindle and many other eBook readers and tablets. This gives the H4 additional advantage over other stands on the market.

The holder also allows 360-degree rotation and 300-degree vertical adjustment. So there is no problem putting iPad at the right angle. Setting the iPad in portrait or landscape orientation is really very easy. However be careful rotating the device, since there are no V-shaped arms on the top.

luxa2-h4

LUXA2 H4 is great for internet browsing, ebook reading, watching movies and even gaming. It looks especially good when used with iPad and external keyboard.

Specifications:

  • Height: 206mm (8.12 inches)
  • Width: 151mm (5.98 inches)
  • Depth: 138mm (5.44 inches)
  • Weight: 446g / 0.98 lbs.
  • Adjustable Angle: 360° (Rotated) and 300°(Vertical)

LUXA2 H4 costs around $59.99. The list of distributors is available here.

Here are more photos and video with LUXA2 H4:

512MB RAM update for iPhone 4

152001-imovieiphone

Since the first iPhone was launched, Apple has been making efforts to hide from the customers some of the actual technical specs of the device. The company has never advertised, let alone published the amount of RAM or the processor speed of the iPhone. Supposedly, the company doesn’t want to distract the customers with these technical details and just tries to focus on the actual functionality of the device.

AT&T Experiences Major Problems With iPhone 4 Preorders

preorders5

Yesterday AT&T suddenly entirely stopped accepting iPhone 4 preorders. The company said that it was the busiest online sales day in its history.

Meanwhile AT&T's site started to show old information on iPhone 3GS prices, that was actual before iPhone 4 was announced. Some people also claimed they were shown info that wasn't theirs on AT&T's and Apple's site (the latter sometimes pulls information from AT&T's site to verify shipping address).

iPhone 4 Became Available For Preorder

iphone-100615

So today is the day when iPhone 4 becomes available for preorder in the U.S., Germany, France, Japan and the U.K.

The Apple's site reveals that the white model is currently unavailable, which was explained by yesterday's AT&T memo, where it is said that supplies may be scarce at launch. The AT&T site reveals that white iPhone 4 is "coming soon", though it is disclosed in the memo that the company's stores will actually take reservations for white model, but it will be shipped later this summer.

Anyway, black iPhone 4 and 8GB iPhone 3GS may be freely preordered, and then picked up in stores or shipped directly to your home on June 24.

The price for iPhone 4 with a two-year contract with AT&T in the USA is $199 for 16GB model and $299 for 32GB model.

The price for unlocked iPhone is €629 for 16GB model and €739 for 32GB model in France, the prices for U.K. customers were revealed earlier.
