Apple Threatens Proview With Lawsuit For Defamation

According to Associated Press, Chinese court has decided against Apple in its ongoing dispute with Proview over the trademark rights to the "iPad" in that country, ruling that distributors should cease selling iPad in China. However, the impact of the decision is unclear as it just one of several lawsuits that Proview has filed against Apple seeking to extract $2 billion for these rights.

Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion coming this summer with 100+ new features

Just a few hours ago Apple has announced Mac OS X 10.8, dubbed "Mountain Lion," the next major release of its Mac operating system, set to launch on the Mac App Store this summer. Apple has boasted that Mountain Lion packs over 100 new features, including many brought from the iPad and iOS mobile operating system.

What's new

New features introduced with Mountain Lion include Messages, which replaces iChat, as well as Notes, Reminders and Game Center for the Mac, Notification Center, Share Sheets, Twitter integration, and AirPlay Mirroring. Mountain Lion will also be the first OS X release with iCloud. Apple also adds Gatekeeper, which helps keep users safe from malicious software by giving control over what applications are installed on a Mac.

Apple Officially Drops 'Mac' From The Name OF Its Future OS

With the release of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion in July of last year, Apple was definitely moving towards dropping the word ‘Mac’ from the 'Mac OS X', which has been used as a name for Macintosh OS for more than 10 years.

Although Apple still used the naming scheme 'Mac OS X' in press releases, it called the new operating system 'OS X Lion' both on the product page of the Mac App Store and the main product webpage.

Game Center for Mountain Lion to offer cross-platform play between Mac, iOS

This time Apple decided to add its Game Center to OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion that is expected to be unveiled this summer. Game Center for Mac will even replicate the user interface of the existing Game Center offerings for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. So, now users will be able to play online competitively and cooperatively against gamers who have the same title for iOS.

  • By logging in with an Apple ID, users can add friends and keep track of their played games in Game Center.
  • Multiplayer games can be initiated with someone added to a friends list, or even with new players randomly matched up.
  • Game Center in Mountain Lion also features leaderboards, so gamers can compare their high scores to friends and other top players around the world.

Apple Ordered 65 million Retina Displays From Samsung And LG For iPad 3

According to ChinaTimes report, Apple has ordered 65 million 2048×1536 Retina displays for iPad 3 from Samsung and LG. Reportedly both companies have already begun production. However it is unclear if this number covers orders to Sharp, which is also rumored to be manufacturing displays for coming iPad 3.

Apple earned $1 out of every $5 US consumers spent on electronics this holiday

NPD's Retail and Consumer tracking Services and Mobile Phone Track found that Apple accounted for 19 percent, or nearly one in five, of all U.S. consumer dollars spent on electronics, during the busy holiday shopping season. Apple, consequently, remained the largest consumer electronics brand for the second year in a row.

All of the other top five brands beyond Apple actually saw a year over year decrease in revenue in 2011. HP's sales dropped by 3 percent, third-place while Samsung dipped 6 percent, fourth-place Sony slid 21 percent, and Dell, in fifth, lost 17 percent.

Chinese Authorities and Retailers Removing iPads from Sale Over Trademark Issues

Last week, Apple was said to be facing a potential fine of approximately $38 million as a result of a trademark dispute in China between Apple and Proview Technology, which claims to have held ownership of the "iPad" trademark there since 2000. Noteworthy, Proview is seeking as much as $1.6 billion in damages. Apple believed that it had acquired the rights to the iPad trademark in China in an earlier $55,000 deal with Proview's parent company that also included European rights. But the Chinese arm of the company now claims that the Chinese rights could not have been part of the deal because those rights were not controlled by the parent company.

Now DigiCha and China.com. report that China authorities have begun taken steps related to the trademark issue, confiscating iPads from retailers' shops. DigiCha reports:

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs did serve on White House council in '90s

The U.S. Commerce Department has confirmed a FBI agent report who claiming that Apple co-founder Steve Jobs served on former President George H.W. Bush's Export Council during the 1990s. He was considered for appointment to the council in 1991.

The Export Council consists of unpaid members who meet a minimum of twice a year to advise the president on trade policy. Given that the Commerce Department said Jobs served during the first Bush administration, it would appear that he was on the council from 1991 to 1993.

Apple now costs just about $460B, more

Yesterday AAPL briefly passed a record $460 billion market cap with new historical stock price high at $493.97 a share. Apple is the most expensive company, the second one is Exxon Mobil Corporation [XOM] with market valuation of $402.72 billion.

Apple Adds Lion Internet Recovery To More Macs Released In 2010

Today Apple released three EFI firmware updates adding Lion Internet Recovery service to the Mid-2010 iMac, Late 2010 MacBook Air and Early 2010 MacBook Pro. The available updates include MacBook Air EFI Firmware Update 2.3, iMac EFI Update 1.8 and MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.6.

In China Apple May Face $38 Million Fine Over 'iPad' Trademark Infringement

iSmashPhone reports that in China Apple may face a $38 million fine from government bodies over alleged infringement of the trademark related to the "iPad" name. However, the fine pales by comparison to the $1.6 billion claim from Proview Technology. The company asserts that it owns the rights for the name and seeks to win a series of suits filed against Apple. Also Proview reportedly expects an apology from Apple and seeks an injunction restraining Apple from using this name in China.

Apple Became The Top Smartphone Vendor In 4Q 2011

Today analytics firm IDC published a report covering five major smartphone manufacturers by market share and shipments for the final quarter of 2011. There is no surprise that Apple takes the first position. According to firm’s data, smartphone manufacturers shipped 157.8 million devices in the fourth quarter, of which 37 million came from Apple, accounting for 23.5% share of the market in the quarter.
