iOS And Android Continue To Dominate The Smartphone Market





Worldwide Smartphone Shipments in Millions of Units

Today research company IDC published a new report for the first quarter of 2013 tracking down shipments of mobile phones by OS.

The report shows that iOS and Android continue to dominate the market with 92,3% of shipments during the quarter. iOS marked its largest 1Q shipment volume with 34.7 million units shipped. iOS’s market share decreased from 23% to 17,3% year over year, while Android increased its market share from 59.2% to 75%.

Philips Updated Its ‘Hue’ Lighting System With A Number Of New Features



Last year Philips released its iOS-controlled "Hue" lighting system that allows users to personalize the lighting experience.

Today Philips announced a major update to the Hue adding many new features. Among the most interesting is integration with IFTTT protocols to allow the system to provide visual alerts for different situations.

Apple Is Seeking To Add Samsung Galaxy S4 To Patent Suit In U.S.



According to a report from FOSS Patents, Apple is seeking to add Samsung's Galaxy S4 flagship smartphone to an ongoing patent lawsuit against Samsung in the United States.

Judge Lucy Koh has already ordered Samsung and Apple to narrow their case, which is scheduled to go to trial in March next year. Each side will be required to limit their accused products to ten (per side). At the current stage the companies have pared their lists to 22 products each.

PayPal Executive Looks For Apple To Implement Fingerprint Sensors In Its New iPhone

iTunes 'Metro' App For Windows 8 Will Not Come 'Any Time Soon'

During an interview with CNN Money, Microsoft CFO Tami Relller said that they talked with Apple about developing an iTunes app for Windows 8, but users shouldn’t expect the app "any time soon". She notes:

Apple is known for the simple, no-frills photos of its mobile devices and, as it turned out, a lot of effort goes into creating those images. German Court Struck Down Provisions In Apple’s Privacy Policy



According to Bloomberg, a German court has told Apple to change its privacy policy governing the use of customer data after ruling that 8 provisions in the policy go against German consumer protection laws.

The lawsuit has been filed by consumer group Verbraucherzentrale Bundesverband, which raises concerns over Apple requesting 'global consent' for use of customer’s data.

Mass Production Of iPad Mini Retina Displays To Start In June Or July

Apple Ranks Number 6 In Fortune 500 List

Today Fortune published its new Fortune 500 list, an annual ranking of the largest companies in the U.S. ranked by revenue. In the new list, Apple has risen to number 6 from its 17th spot in the last year’s rankings.

Analyst Expects Retina iPad Mini Updates In 3Q 2013 and 1Q 2014



An analyst Richard Shim from NPD DisplaySearch claims (via CNET) that Apple is going to release two updated iPad mini devices.

"We see two refreshes coming. One in the second half of this year, then one in Q1 [first quarter] of 2014," analyst Richard Shim told CNET late Sunday night.

"The Q1 [2014] device will have a Retina display plus an updated processor," Shim added.

Apple has just released iOS 6.1.4 for the iPhone 5 only that brings an updated audio profile for the speakerphone.

You can download the latest iPhone firmware from here.

This firmware is not jailbreakable yet.

After Google Search app was updated with the Google Now service last week, many users began reporting that the app was draining iPhone’s battery by constantly accessing Location Services.

Today Google employee posted on the Macworld forum saying that Google Now service does not excessively drain battery.

Apple Began Countdown To Fifty Billion App Downloads



Apple has began a new iTunes countdown, offering a gift card for $10,000 to a customer who downloads the fifty billionth app, similar to earlier promotions on the App Store. During its most recent earnings call Apple said that it has surpassed 45 billion total app downloads.

Apple Added New 512 GB and 256 GB Flash Storage Options For iMacs



Apple has included new storage options to its iMac line, allowing users to choose a 512 GB or a 256 GB flash storage drive as part of the process of order customization. The new options can be added at $600 and $300 surcharges respectively in place of the 1 TB hard drive that is standard in all iMac models.

Jony Ive’s Design Overhaul Could Lead To Delays For iOS 7



Today Bloomberg reported that Jony Ive’s efforts to redesign iOS as part of his new software design role puts Apple at risk of delaying the release of iOS 7. While a public release is said to currently stay on schedule for "as soon as September", internal deadlines in the company has been pushed back as software teams race to finish iOS 7 and prepare a preview for Worldwide Developers Conference in June.
