Apple’s Supply Manager Earned $1M By Selling Company’s Secrets

bribe

New report published in the San Jose Mercury News reveals that recently Apple’s global supply manager Paul Shin Devine was accused by the US Internal Revenue Service and Federal Bureau of Investigation in a fraud scheme. It is claimed that Devine was using his security clearance to obtain confidential information about Apple’s upcoming products and provide it to the company’s suppliers. The latter then used the info to make favorable deals with Apple and after that paid Devine kickbacks. One of the suppliers was Andrew Ang from Singapore, who is also named in the indictment as an accomplice, as Devine was sharing his kickbacks with him.

To receive payments Devine held a series of accounts inside and outside the US. Payments were marked as “samples” so no attention was attracted. Bank accounts were registered under his and his wife’s names. It is reported that sometimes Devine received bribes on the meetings with suppliers in Asia.

Saurik released a PDF patch for older and already jailbroken iOS devices

pdffix

As you may know, few days ago Apple had released a new version of iOS for all its mobile devices except first-generation iPhone and iPod touch, so owners of the latter are still not protected from a security flaw that allows hackers to obtain a remote control of their handsets. In fact, the latest compatible version for them is currently iOS 3.1.3.

But Saurik (who is known as a developer of Cydia) recently announced on the Dev-Team blog that he released a PDF patch that is compatible with any iOS version down to 2.x. It can be found in Cydia if you'll search for "PDF Patch". After installing it you can check if the patch is working properly with visiting jailbreakme.com page. After sliding the box to jailbreak you should only see the star background (and not a dialog box), which means you are no longer vulnerable.

Gruber: Next iPod touch Will Have Retina Display And 2 Cameras

DaringFireball

This Tuesday well-known blogger John Gruber posted a note on his Daring Fireball blog, where he said that the upcoming tablet device from Dell called Streak will cost $550 (without a contract from AT&T) and that new iPod touch will have new features that Streak doesn't have.

"That's almost twice as much as a good iPod touch, and if you wait a few weeks to buy the Touch, you'll get one with a Retina Display and dual cameras. If Dell can't make an iPod touch competitor, who can?"

Though Gruber did not say whether he obtained this information from his sources or not, previous rumors confirm that the next-gen iPod touch will support FaceTime (which requires two cameras).

Concerns about the First Generation iPod Nano Battery in Japan

According to the Reuters news agency, one of the Japanese authorities demanded from Apple to provide customers with the information about obtaining spare batteries for the first generation IPod Nano with respect to the fire hazard from the superheated batteries.

The authorities requested Apple to issue on the Internet an easy-to-understand statement to explain how the users of the device involved in four cases of minor burns in Japan will be able to receive spare batteries and appropriate consultations.

The Japanese authorities began to put pressure on Apple on this issue last week but the company referred to the fact that the matter had been transferred to the supplier of batteries. The company said that safety would be considered as their top priority.

Head of iPhone Division Leaves Apple

Mark PaperMaster

This week Apple announced the retirement of the iPhone and iPod division head Mark Papermaster.  Various resources started immediately discuss whether Papermaster was fired or he left on his own record as no information was revealed on that.  Some of them speculated that it may be possibly connected with the recent antenna issue situation and its negative consequences for the company's reputation.

Mark Papermaster came to Apple from IBM two years ago. That was accompanied with a legal battle between these two companies as IBM was afraid that Mark could tell Apple too many secrets. In January of 2009 a settlement was reached and IBM obtained a permission to "keep an eye" on Mark's duties at Cupertino's company. But that legal dispute showed that Papermaster was not a best choice to become a leader of iPhone and iPod division.

Front Part of The Next-Gen iPod Touch Has a Space for Camera

iPodTouchPart1 iPodTouchPart2

This Thursday Macrumors received photos of one of the next-gen iPod touch parts, which reveal a hole above the display that will be most likely used for the camera. The pictures were sent by an unknown iPhone parts supplier.

Previously some resources reported about the presence of a camera and flash on the back of upcoming iPod touch. If all this information is true, the next-gen device will have two cameras to support FaceTime like the iPhone 4.

Apple wanted to build camera into the last iPod touch a year ago, but due to the technical problems the decision was annulled. When the final version of the player appeared on the market a space for camera was found inside of it after disassembling.

FaceTime support in iPod touch will be no surprise as previously Steve Jobs said that this year Apple will ship millions of devices compatible with FaceTime.

New Jailbreak for iOS Devices is Browser-Based

BrowserJailbreak

Starting today every owner of iPad, iPhone or iPod can easily jailbreak his device via browser on http://jailbreakme.com/

The site was created in a week after decision of the Library of Congress (that operates the Copyright Office), which states that jailbreaking isn't illegal, though Apple claims it actually represents a threat to the stability and security of the company's devices. Apple also says that jailbreaking voids the warranty, but such an action can be easily undone by resetting a device to the default factory settings.

Site JailbreakMe.com easily became a trending topic in Twitter after its announcement on RedmondPie.com. The jailbreak itself was created by hacker comex, and the website was done by chpwn and westbaer.
