apple manufacturer

Many independent environmental groups seek to verify Apple’s own findings related to working conditions on its supplier factories and they finally got Apple's permission. The company will open up its supplier factories to third-party environmental inspections in order to cooperate on audits.

Ma Jun, founder of the Institute of Public & Environmental Affairs, said in an interview that Apple had agreed late last month to open up its facilities to address reports from IPE and other groups outing suspected Apple suppliers as polluters. The audits could start as early as next month and may eventually expand to other suppliers.

Apple intern's thesis leaks secret project to port Mac OS X to ARM processors

a4-apple-chip-top

In 2010, Tristan Schaap, who now serves as a Core OS engineer at Apple, published a Bachelor thesis on his 12-week stint as an intern with Apple's Platform Technologies Group, a subdivision of the Core OS department. The thesis revealed that the former Apple intern had been working on the secret project to port Mac OS X Snow Leopard to the ARM architecture.

According to the paper, Schaap worked with the group to get Darwin, the "lower half" of Apple's Mac OS X operating system, to boot onto an ARM processor from Marvell. During the course of the project, he achieved his goal of "booting into a multi-user prompt," though some issues still remained due to a "poor implementation on the debug hardware."

Best Buy customer survey details 42-inch Apple HDTV with iOS

best buy survey

Best Buy has decided to carry out a survey related to the rumored Apple’s HDTV powered by iOS that, noteworthy to say, has not been released yet. The questionnaire notes that the 42-inch Apple HDTV "finally reinvents what a TV can do," with a 1080p LED flat panel display, connectivity with iCloud, and the ability to use an iPhone or an iPad as a remote control, and "iSight" camera. Such details, however, look like speculations on the part of Best Buy. Since introducing FaceTime video chat, Apple has referred to its forward-facing cameras as FaceTime cameras, not iSight.

The full details from the survey follow:

Mac platform faced 58 malware threats from Q2 to Q4 2011

malware

Security lab F-Secure released its 2011 Mac Malware Summary earlier this week, noting that Mac OS X platform endured 58 separate malware attacks from April 2011 to December 2011. Of course, this numbers couldn’t be compared with multiply attacks that Microsoft's Windows operating system experienced over the same period.

The firm counted only unique variants of malware that occurred during the second, third and fourth quarters of 2011. "We prefer a more conservative approach when counting malware. The more generic and family based, the better," the report noted.

iOS 5.1 beta 3 hints Apple is planning deep Facebook integration

iOSbeta3

iMore dug through the recently released third beta of iOS 5.1 and found evidence showing that Apple could add a deeper iPhone and iPad integration with Facebook into a future operating system update. In one screenshot shown for the iOS Contacts application, there is an option to enter a person's Facebook user name right below their Twitter account. The same deeper integration was provided for Twitter that was one of the most-touted features of iOS 5, which was publicly released last October.

Deep integration with the social networking service allows users to quickly post Web links from Safari or pictures saved in the Photos application to Twitter. Presumably, future iOS integration with Facebook would offer similar functionality, making it easier for users to share information with their friends on the popular website.

The pre-release build of iOS 5.1 also reportedly includes references to new iPad models that are named in the code such as "J1AP" and "J2AP." The references corroborate with rumored code-names of "J1" and "J2" that were first reported last November, when it was said that Apple was secretly working on two new iPad models.
