Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray has issued a new report, claiming that Apple’s iPhone 5s is currently available in all of the retail stores across the USA. The analyst’s figures are based on data from 60 locations in different cities. According to what Munster writes, all models, either carrier-locked or unlocked and SIM-free, can be purchased right now.
Apple starts using its iBeacon technology at all 254 retail stores across the United States. In case you don’t know what iBeacon is, I’ll try to explain. This is the system based on Bluetooth that can send various messages to your iPhone or iPad. In our particular case, these are mostly detailed product descriptions and information about special discounts available at the store.
The company from Cupertino was granted a patent No. 8,600,120 for "Personal computing device control using face detection and recognition" on Tuesday. In other words, it’s a technology that allows your iPhone or iPad to recognize you among other people. Such a system can possibly take mobile security to the next level.
Apple suppliers have finally produced enough iPhone 5s units to catch up with the demand, latest survey claims. Well, almost - currently about 90% of the flagship models are available for purchase at the company’s retail stores. And it’s a very substantial increase, I must admit. iPhone 5s supply grew from 31% on November 11th to what we have now.
Apple on Friday started offering unlocked, SIM-free iPhone 5s units with shipping estimates of 1-2 weeks. For you to compare - those who decide to purchase the device on contract have to wait for about 3-5 weeks. As to the prices, they’re just the same for both SIM-free and locked smartphones. The iPhone 5s with 16GB of memory on board is available for $649; for the model with 32GB and 64GB of memory one will have to pay extra $100 or $200 respectively.
According to secret documents leaked by WikiLeaks not long ago, the White House has been in talks with other countries to make phone unlocking illegal by international law. And it is rather strange since in public the US government supports those who struggle for the legalization of unlocking.
Tom Wheeler, the new FCC Chairman, has recently asked CTIA (The Wireless Association) to make phone unlocking legal as soon as possible - before the December holidays. In the letter he has sent to CTIA he says that if this request is not fulfilled in time, FCC will regulate the unlocking process itself.
Good news for those who hasn’t yet purchased the iPhone 5s - Apple's online store now displays shipping times of two to three weeks. With more than 9 million iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c units sold during the launch weekend, the company from Cupertino had to push the shipping dates to “October”. And now, at last, 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models are said to become available within only two weeks.
