iPhone 5 confirmed to use nano-SIM, current SIMs not compatible

iphone5-pr-34-angle

Apple did not mention that iPhone 5 would use the recently approved (and Apple-designed) nano-SIM standard. Apple is relying on that even tinier subscriber module for GSM, HSPA and LTE networks. Unfortunately it is not possible to create nano-SIM out of micro-SIM. Cutting does not help, they are just not compartible.

Leaked photos show iPhone 5 has A6 CPU and LTE

Leaked photos reveal that the iPhone 5 will feature a A6 processor and Apple's search engine has confirmed that the phone will support LTE.

The photos that were posted on HDblog.it (via MacRumors) show the new iPhone's logic board in greater detail than previous leaks.

Beyond the A6, the new photos also show that the Qualcomm chip located opposite the nano-SIM tray from the A6 is indeed the MDM9615M modem, which has long been rumored as the chip to supply LTE compatibility for the iPhone 5.

iPhone 5 preorders to start on September 14th

iPhone 5 Render Based on Leaked Parts

Rumors say that pre-orders for the next generation iPhone 5 are reportedly set to begin the morning of Friday, September 14th, according to MacRumors:

MacRumors is now hearing that pre-orders may not begin tomorrow following the media event and that they may instead start on Friday morning in a scenario similar to last year's debut. We're hearing that certain portions of Apple's online sales support team are significantly increasing their staffing levels beginning at 6:00 AM Eastern on Friday, with a major surge for the initial shift beginning at that time and a sustained level of high staffing for at least the remainder of the day.

Last year, the iPhone 4S was set to begin pre-orders at 12:01 AM Pacific Time the Friday following the Apple's media event.

So users are given an extra couple of days to get the money together.

Upcoming OS X Mountain Lion version may solve laptop battery life woes

12.09.10-Battery

The unscientific test carried out by The Mac Observer claims to show significant boost in MacBook battery life using a new developer build 12C35 of OS X Mountain Lion, with the latest beta showing an 85-minute increase from the current 10.8.1.

Using OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard as a baseline, the compiled test data showed a significant hit to battery performance with the introductions of 10.7 Lion and 10.8 Mountain Lion. Upon release, Lion lost over 40 minutes of battery life and took three revisions to regain Snow Leopard power efficiency. In contrast, Mountain Lion saw a huge 105 minute loss in battery performance when it was released in July, with the latest 10.8.1 version moving the OS only 30 minutes closer to baseline.
