Smartphone makers plan to mirror Apple's approach with fewer models each year

iphone4spr

DigiTimes reported on Friday that HTC, Research in Motion, Sony and Motorola Mobility are planning to change their strategies by reducing the number of new handsets that they produce in an attempt to repeat success of Apple’s products. As far as we know, the company releases just one iPhone model each year, while other mobile manufactures produce plethora of smartphones, which often differ from each other with minor changes.

Such strategy will allow increasing sales and saving money on development and marketing costs. The companies also expect to be more efficient in obtaining components and shipping products.

Sculley: If anyone is going to change television, it’s going to be Apple

sculley

John Sculley, former vice-president and president of PepsiCo and CEO of Apple between 1983 and 1993, and a Silicon Valley investor nowadays, believes that Apple is the only company that would be able to change the first principles of the television experience. In an interview with BBC Sculley confessed that has not read Walter Isaacson’s authorized biography of Apple’s late cofounder and CEO, but admitted that the television industry is about to experience Apple’s magic touch:

I think that Apple has revolutionized every other consumer industry, why not television? I think that televisions are unnecessarily complex. The irony is that as the pictures get better and the choice of content gets broader, that the complexity of the experience of using the television gets more and more complicated. So it seems exactly the sort of problem that if anyone is going to change the experience of what the first principles are, it is going to be Apple.

Rupert Murdoch confirms Sculley’s words about Apple television, writing on Twitter this morning: “All talk is about coming Apple TV. Plenty of apprehension, no firm facts but eyes on their enormous cash pile”.

Apple is first technology company to join Fair Labor Association

apple_fair_labor_association_logos

Bloomberg reports that Apple has joint to the Fair Labor Association (FLA). By joining the FLA, Apple agrees to have the association independently assess facilities in its supply chain and report detailed findings on the association's website. Apple is the first technology business to sign up to the FLA as a participating company currently.

The FLA already worked with Apple last year on the company's training programs regarding labor rights and worker standards, and that Apple will bring all of its workplace compliance standards in line with the FLA's guidelines over the next two years.

"We found that Apple takes supplier responsibility seriously and we look forward to their participation in the Fair Labor Association," Auret van Heerden, FLA's President and CEO, said in a press release. "We welcome Apple's commitment to greater transparency and independent oversight, and we hope its participation will set a new standard for the electronics industry."

Apple Researching Motion-Sensing Virtual 3D User Interface for iOS Devices

apple_3d_interface_iphone

Patently Apple has discovered a newly-published patent application from Apple. The application describes the use of motion sensors to create a virtual three-dimensional interface for iOS devices. Such interface could be a co-called virtual room that could be navigated by changing the orientation of the device. Noteworthy, similar concepts are found in some augmented reality apps.

The invention covers a 3D display environment for mobile device that uses orientation data from one or more onboard sensors to automatically determine and display a perspective projection of the 3D display environment based on the orientation data without the user physically interacting with (e.g., touching) the display.

Morgan Stanley: Apple's next iPhone to be slimmer, may include quad-mode LTE chip

iphone5

Investment bank Morgan Stanley believes that Apple's next-generation iPhone will be slimmer and could include a quad-mode chip from Qualcomm that would allow for 3G and LTE functionality across all networks.

Morgan Stanley's analyst Katy Huberty suggests that the device will be ready at the end of the second quarter, but the launch will depend on «manufacturing yields,» and the next-generation iPhone is likely to arrive in the third quarter.

Huberty said «it appears that the next-generation iPhone will incorporate Qualcomm's quad-mode chip that would allow it to «run on all 3G and LTE network flavors,» but she said it was «too early to know for sure.»

sony-music-unlimited-logo

iTunes had for a long time been the only marketplace for iOS-device owners as third-party storefronts was prohibited by Apple’s rules. Giving way to government regulators, Apple last year changed its policy related to third-party stores and allowed subscriptions. This opened the way for music apps from Shazam and Spotify that have recently appeared on the iOS platfrorm. Currently another major music service is going to compete with iTunes.

Strong sales of iPhone 4S a precursor to 'monster' launch of redesigned 'iPhone 5'

piper

The well-known Piper Jaffray analyst, Gene Munster, sent a note to investors on Wednesday where he increased his expectations related to the iPhone sales over the holiday quarter up to 30 million units. But the record sales aren’t the thing that really deserves attention.   Instead, Munster 's looking toward the future, with a next-generation redesigned iPhone, which he believes is going to accelerate Apple's growth even further than the current iPhone 4S.

"If Apple sells 30 (million)-plus iPhones in Dec., with no new form factor, up from 17.1m in Sept., it would be evidence supporting our survey work indicating that 94% of iPhone users plan to upgrade to a new iPhone," Munster wrote. "This theme suggests iPhone 5, which we are expecting in Aug. with a new form factor, will be a monster upgrade."
