Publishers object to Apple's e-book case punishment

Five publishers are against the decision of the Department of Justice concerning the punishment for Apple after the  rumored anti-trust iBookstore case.

According to court decision ,Apple was proved to be guilty of fixing e-book prices and therefore forcing the customer to pay higher prices. Apple claims the accusations to be faulty and now the company is planing to appeal the decision.

In a court filing Wednesday afternoon, the publishers said that the U.S. Department of Justice’s demands on Apple would eliminate the use of the “agency model” for the sale and distribution of e-books for a period of five years, by prohibiting Apple from entering such agreements.

Apple conspires to raise e-books price

On the 20th June US District Judge Denise Cote ruled that Apple conspired to raise the retail prices of e-books, says Reuters report. The publishers Macmillan and Penguin, names co-defendants, set the price of each book and gave the seller a 30% cut instead of using traditional wholesale models.

According to Eddy Cue, Apple's SVP of Internet Software and Services, the prices for iBookstore have grown due to inflation. The statement does not help Apple much, especially when Mr. Cue is considered the head of the conspiracy.

Apple working on version of Siri to help you purchase products online

patent

This week AppleInsider discovered a new patent application from Apple that demonstrates company's interest in expanding its Siri voice-assistant to help with online shopping. The current version of the service available exclusively on the iPhone 4S does not allow users to make online purchases. The voice-driven personal assistant software responds with "Sorry, I can't purchase that," when a user tries to complete transactions with online stores.

The patent application, entitled "Intelligent Automated Assistant," is a detailed look not only at what Siri can already do, but what it might be able to do in the future. And it specifically highlights e-commerce as a key function of its "Intelligent Automated Assistant." The application notes that Siri could be used for "online purchases of items such as books, DVDs, music and the like."

Apple reportedly planning New York City media event this month

apple logo

All Things D reported on Monday that Apple is reportedly planning an event scheduled to take place in New York at the end of January. The company is said to use the event as a platform for an advertising or publishing announcement. Of course, many anxiously await the announcement of a much anticipated iPad 3 or new Apple TV, which some think will be launched later in 2012. Apple usually reserves product launches and important announcements for its home-state like the latest iPhone 4S, which debuted on Oct. 4, 2011 at Apple's campus.

According to sources close to the situation, Apple is planning an important — but not large-scale — event to be held in New York at the end of this month that will focus on a media-related announcement.

Per the usual caveat, the tech giant is well known for moving around their public show-and-tells, so this could certainly change at any moment.

Several of Apple's media and advertising units have significant presences in New York City, and Apple Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue (Cue is currently heading up the iTunes Store, App Store, iBookstore) is said to take part in the end of the event that has caused rumors suggesting that Apple’s announcement may be connected with advertising or publishing.

Apple Promotes Eddy Cue To Senior Vice President Of Internet Software And Services

apple-exec-eddy-cue

Yesterday, Tim Cook started redirecting customers’ e-mails to Eddy Cue, Apple's vice president for Internet services. Cook confirmed 9to5Mac that Cue was officially promoted to a senior vise president position.

From an internal Apple email sent by Tim Cook:

It is my pleasure to announce the promotion of Eddy Cue to Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services. Eddy will report to me and will serve on Apple’s executive management team.

Eddy oversees Apple’s industry-leading content stores including the iTunes Store, the revolutionary App Store and the iBookstore, as well as iAd and Apple’s innovative iCloud services. He is a 22-year Apple veteran and leads a large organization of amazing people. He played a major role in creating the Apple online store in 1998, the iTunes Music Store in 2003 and the App Store in 2008.

Cue's promotion may be the first move in a reshuffling of Apple's leadership. The position of Chief Operating Officer is now vacant. Apple’s COO was Tim Cook until his ascension to the CEO position. And soon a position of a senior vice president for retail will be vacant as he takes the CEO position at J.C. Penney.
