White iPhone 4 to Finally Arrive By End of April

iphone_4

Bloomberg reports that Apple will finally deliver the long-awaited white iPhone 4 by the end of April. The publication mentions “three people familiar with the plans”, and claims the device will be available both on AT&T and Verizon in the United States.

The new version will be available from AT&T Inc. and Verizon Wireless by the end of April, said one of the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans aren't public. The release was stalled as Apple resolved manufacturing challenges, including paint that peeled under heat, one person said.

The exact reason why Apple delayed the initial June 2010 release date hasn’t been revealed by the company, but previous speculation suggested problems with the white paint caused the device to take bad photos due to light leaks. The new model obviously may help boost sales of the iPhone 4.

iPhone taking secret pictures of FaceTime users

face time

Some FaceTime users have complained of strange glitch with Apple’s FaceTime platform. iPhone users report that they are seeing photos of themselves that they had never taken on FaceTime when they are trying to video call to another user.

"When one of us is calling the other via FaceTime, an old picture freezes on our screen, while the person receiving the call only sees a black screen," a person using the name "kar0786" wrote on Apple's discussion forums. "It's kind of creepy, because it brought up photos of both of us at work, where I have used FaceTime a few times but he never has."

Apple support advised these users to return factory settings but it didn’t work. One of the users continued experiencing the problem even when Apple had replaced the device with the new one.

Apple no longer allows Best Buy to sell the iPad 2

best-buy-logo

CrunchGear reports that Apple may freeze sales of the iPad 2 through Best Buy.

A reader who works at Best Buy just told us that there's been a bit of a misunderstanding between the electronics retailer and Apple. Apparently, Best Buy was holding off on selling the iPad 2s it had in stock, telling customers there weren't any when in fact they had just reached their quota of sales for the day.

It's rumored that Apple's Tim Cook took a hand to this chicanery, and Apple isn't happy about it at all.

Apple ordered 12 petabytes of storage to support iTunes video offerings

isilon

StorageNewsletter.com reports that Apple has placed a order for about 12 petabytes of storage from Isilon Systems. According to an inside source, the company will use this storage to support iTunes video downloaded by its customers. This order will make Apple the largest Isilon’s customer.

A petabyte of data is a huge amount of data; it's 1024 terabytes. Consumer hard drives nowadays top out at 3 TB. If you tried to store a petabyte of data on dual-layer Blu-ray discs (50 GB each), it would take almost 21,000 discs to fit it all... and Apple just bought 12 of those. It'll be interesting to see what they do with all of that storage

Suppliers delivered 2.4M-2.6M iPad 2 units to Apple in March

ipad-2

The new numbers saying how many iPad 2 units Apple received from its suppliers in March were recently revealed.  A report claims that Apple received between 2.4 million and 2.6 million of the iPad 2 units in March. Given regular stock-outs of the iPad 2 in March, Apple presumably sold through the entirety of shipments it received. That would mean Apple sold at least 2.4 million units in March. Moreover suppliers noted that sales of the iPad 2 are running faster than the first-generation device. For comparison, the first-generation iPad took 28 days to reach its first million sales. Apple has been silent about sales of the iPad 2 since the device launched in the United States early last month.

Apple Asks Toyota to Pull Jailbreak Ad Campaign

toyota

Apple reportedly asked Toyota to remove from Cydia its exclusive theme created by Toyota's advertising company Velti for promotion of its new vehicle and available for jailbroken iPhones.

Scion, a brand of vehicles manufactured by Toyota, recently developed a custom iPhone theme specifically for jailbroken devices, submitting it to us for hosting in Cydia.

As far as we know, Apple is strongly against jailbroken devices but this advertising campaign may somehow help to legitimize the jailbreak community and also place it in direct competition with Apple's own iAds network. Apple apparently heard about the campaign and has asked Toyota to pull it.

Next-Generation iPod Nano to Add Rear-Facing Camera

ipod_nano

Taiwanese site Apple.pro reports that the seventh-generation iPod nano presumably set for introduction later this year may retain its current smaller form factor but still add a rear-facing camera once again. The photo above claimed to be the rear case for the next-generation iPod nano with a camera hole in an upper right corner.  The camera seems to take up some space occupied by the battery, so the new device may use a smaller battery or its components could be shifted to accommodate the camera.

Apple Releases Mac OS X Lion Developer Preview 2

LION_PREVIEW_2-thumb

Yesterday Apple released the second developer preview of Maс OS X Lion for testing purposes. The new Build 11A419 is not a Gold Master Candidate build, as it still contains many known issues that need to be fixed. Changes included in the update are currently unknown. It seems that the update is aimed at allowing developers to download future updates. Nevertheless, TechCrunch reports that this is indeed the "golden master candidate" build it discussed over the weekend and that the company is simply not going to push out a final release candidate until around its Worldwide Developer Conference in early June.
