Apple Already Pursuing Minor Expansion at North Carolina Data Center

In March, Apple filed an application for permit to build a "tactical data center" to be located at the site of the company's existing data center in Maiden, North Carolina. Such tactical data center is expected to locate at the relatively small area of 20,000 square feet. The Hickory Daily Record that discovered Apple’s filling now issued a new report revealing more details on Apple's plans.

Carriers Testing Nano-SIMs Ahead Of iPhone 5 Launch

Earlier this week we reported that European mobile operators began stockpiling nano-SIM cards in anticipation of Apple using the new card in the next iPhone. Now BGR reports that carriers have already began testing the nano-SIM cards in cooperation with Apple.

18.6% Of Apps Collect User’s Address Book Data And 41% Track Location

Today security company BitDefender published a report (via MobileEntertainment) that highlights the importance of adopting Apple’s data isolation policy in iOS 6.

Starting with the iOS 6 release this fall, apps that need access to personal data (reminders, photos, contacts, calendars etc.) will have to ask users to allow them use such data. However, according to BitDefender, now about 18.6% of 65,000 apps for iPhone that was included in the study can access data in a user’s address book, while 41% of them can track location. The company also revealed that only 57.7% of apps encrypt user’s personal data.

Apple's Early Prototype iPad Had a 12-Inch Display

Yesterday we published some interesting photos of the early iPad prototype created in the 2002-2004 timeframe. The photos revealed the similar design to the device released in 2010, but the early prototype was 1-inch thicker than the original iPad. As we may see, the prototype also has rounded corners and 4:3 aspect ratio for the display.

UK Judge Ruled Apple Must Publicly State Samsung Didn’t Copy iPad

Bloomberg reports that UK judge Colin Briss has ordered Apple to publicly state in British newspapers and on its UK website that Samsung didn’t copy the iPad design with its Galaxy Tab 10.1. The notice should be posted on the company’s UK website for six months. Previously the UK court ruled that Samsung’s Galaxy Tab didn’t copy iPad design, with the judge noting that the Galaxy Tab is “not as cool” as Apple’s tablet.

Photos Of Earliest iPad Prototype Surfaced In Ongoing Patent Dispute

Network World’s iOnApple issued a report on a recently-revealed deposition that was given by Apple’s head of design Jonathan Ive in the patent dispute between Samsung and Apple. During the deposition, Ive was shown photos of the earliest iPad mockups, which apparently were taken at some point between 2002 and 2004. From Jonathan Ive’s testimony:

“My recollection of first seeing it is very hazy, but it was, I'm guessing, sometime between 2002 and 2004, some but it was I remember seeing this and perhaps models similar to this when we were first exploring tablet designs that ultimately became the iPad”.

European Carriers Stockpiling Nano-SIMs Ahead iPhone 5 launch

Financial Times reports that European carriers have begun stockpiling the new nano-SIMs ahead the launch of the next-generation iPhone that will use the new standard.

Operators expect that the iPhone will feature the nano sim in a slimmed down design, according to two sources with knowledge of the situation, and have begun to store millions of the cards in warehouses in anticipation of high demand for Apple’s iPhone. Apple declined to comment.

Former Apple exec Bertrand Serlet joins Parallels board

Former Apple Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Bertrand Serlet, often called the "father of Mac OS X, joined Parallels. His position will be a non-executive director.

In a statement regarding the new position, Parallels CEO Birger Steen described Serlet as “the rare combination of a software visionary and master of execution.”

Bertrand Serlet  left Apple in 2011 to reportedly "focus less on products and more on science."  Serlet had been reportedly working with at least two other former Apple employees on a cloud computing startup called "Upthere." Located in Palo Alto, Calif., the company is described as a cloud hosting provider with "consulting services in the field of cloud computing."

Next iPhone To Include Thinner Screen With Higher Image Quality

As The Wall Street Journal reports, Apple will adopt “in-cell” technology in the next-generation iPhone in order to make its screen thinner. In fact, the publication claims that mass production of such panels has already started.

“Japanese liquid-crystal-display makers Sharp Corp. and Japan Display Inc.—a new company that combined three Japanese electronics makers' display units—as well as South Korea's LG Display Co. are currently mass producing panels for the next iPhone using so-called in-cell technology, the people said”.

Apple Released Beta 3 Of iOS 6 And Rolled Out @icloud.com Email Addresses

Today Apple released the beta 3 of iOS 6 to developers. The new mobile operation system is expected to launch “this fall”, probably along with the new iPhone in the September-October timeframe.
The beta 3, which comes as Build 10A5355d, arrived three weeks after the release of previous version for developers of Build 10A5338d.

Smaller iPad Costing "Significantly Less" Than $499 Coming This Fall, According to NYT

The New York Times sources confirmed previous rumors about launch of the iPad mini that would cost "significantly less than the latest $499 iPad" when it debuts later this year.

According to analysts and executives in the technology industry, the smaller iPad is part of an Apple strategy to garner and retain a larger marketshare by introducing a variety of tablet sizes. The publication notes the Cupertino-based company used a similar model with the iPod line which now ranges from the iPod shuffle to the iPod classic.

Apple Is Trying To Combat In App Purchase Hack

Last week we reported that Russian hacker has launched a new method allowing users of App Store to bypass In App Purchase system and obtain paid-in content for free. We also noted that apart from theft of content from developers the method exposed users of iOS devices to risks as their personal information was sent to hacker’s servers.

iPhone 5 front bezel photo leaked

Apple.Pro has posted another photo of the next-generation iPhone 5 front panel. We have posted something similar in May. This time it's a single white frame, the black is just the frame flipped over.

More of these same frames are leaking out as production is reportedly starting.

iPhone 5 Production Underway for an Expected Fall Launch

Mac blog MacOtakara reported on Saturday that their sources from Chinese claimed Apple had started production of the next-generation iPhone. The rumored smartphone will reportedly feature design changes, including the addition of glass to the unit's "uni-body" backplate. Unlike the iPhone 4 and 4S which boast a "glass sandwich" design with tough Gorilla Glass front and back coverings, the upcoming handset will reportedly have a backplate only "partially covered" by the tough material. Other significant change is the 4-inch Retina display with 16:9 aspect ratio.
