Apple Announces September 19th Release Date for iOS 6
Other announcement Apple made yesterday was the release of iOS 6 mobile operating system, which was first announced in June at the company's WWDC keynote event and will be available on September 19th as a free download for the 4S, 4, 3GS, new iPad, iPad 2 and 4th generation iPod Touch. The iPhone 5 will ship with iOS 6.
Apple already detailed the specific iOS 6 features that would be available to certain iOS devices back in June. Siri will be enhanced to provide movie information, sports scores, and the ability to post to Facebook and Twitter. The new Passbook app will hold tickets, passes, and payment cards for participating businesses. Safari will have a full-screen mode for better browsing and iCloud tabs to save your open tabs and offer immediate access to them on your other iOS devices and your computer.

Apple will reportedly make at least minor changes to their three current iPod lines. 9to5Mac shares some details on Apple's apparent plans for updated iPods reportedly set to be introduced alongside the iPhone 5 at next Wednesday's media event.

The Loop reports that Apple on Tuesday sent out invitations for an upcoming media event scheduled for next week Wednesday, September 12. The event will be held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco and begins at 10:00 AM Pacific / 1:00 PM Eastern. The tagline on the invitation is simply "It's almost here."

Jim Dalrymple, the well-known Apple journalist, reported in his blog on Thursday that Apple may be preparing to debut a next-gen iPhone and 'iPad mini' at two separate media events. Apple is widely expected to debut the sixth-generation iPhone at a special event on September 12, at which time pre-orders are said to begin. Further rumors point to a U.S. rollout starting September 21. Almost nothing is known of the iPad mini. Different report suggests that the smaller iPad will debut at either the same iPhone event or at a later date.

Apple to Buy Mobile Security Company AuthenTec for $356 Million
Reuters reports that Apple has reportedly reached a deal to purchase AuthenTec, a security company best known for creating fingerprint sensors, for $356 million. The acquisition agreement was approved with unanimous consent by AuthenTec's board this week, according to Bezinga. Yesterday Apple announced financial results for the second calendar quarter and third fiscal quarter of 2012. Apple posted revenue of $35.0 billion and net quarterly profit of $8.8 billion. The numbers are dramatically weaker than what analysts were expecting. The company did beat its own guidance, however. Last quarter, Apple said it would make $34 billion in revenue.
