Two new iPads (iPad 2,4 and iPad 3,3) are found in iOS 5.1 firmware

ipad33

In the just released iOS 5.1 beta, developers have found references to two new iPad devices. They have codenames iPad 2,4 and iPad 3,3.

Just to remind you, iPad 2 has 3 different codenames - iPad 2 Wifi version is iPad 2,1, iPad 2 GSM is iPad 2,2 and iPad 2 CDMA is iPad 2,3. So what could be the new iPad 2,4? There are rumors that this new gadget might be a Sprint version of iPad 2. However 3G Sprint iPad would be the same hardware as the Verizon iPad, so new name might be iPad 2 WiMAX. Other rumors say this is iPad for China's TD-LTE or a dual-mode device like the current iPhone 4S.

Siri can do almost anything, even start or lock your car

After developers created a proxy server between Siri and Apple to use custom commands and actions Siri can do just about everything you want it to. Take a look how one developer took proxy server and hooked it up to Viper Car system which allows him to turn his car off and on.

The “Siri Proxy” plugin I wrote handles interaction with a php script that runs on my web server. The php script, which I developed months ago for personal use, allows me to send commands to my car which has a Viper SmartStart module installed.

Current commands accepted are: “Vehicle Arm”, “Vehicle Disarm”, “Vehicle Start”, “Vehicle Stop”, “Vehicle Pop Trunk”, and “Vehicle Panic”.

Take a look at locking and arming the car alarm video below:

Developers crack Siri’s security protocol to enable it with any device

siri_icon

A team of developers called Applidium has announced that they managed to investigate how Siri, exclusive service available on the iPhone 4S, talks to Apple servers. Applidium notes that iPhone 4S uses standard HTTPS network requests to communicate with Apple's servers, but sends data using an "ACE" command rather than regular web GET requests. Moreover, each Siri request involves a unique identifier based on UUID. Such identifier prevents access of unauthorized devices to Apple’s servers. User’s requests are compressed with the Speex audio codec optimized for VoIP. Applidium discovered that iPhone, to provide Siri’s voice recognition, should support at least Siri's basic voice recognition features, but Apple doesn’t plan to port such capabilities on earlier iOS 5 models.

So far, Applidium's investigation has revealed that Siri packages requests in compressed property lists, but further exploration of the protocol is hampered by a number of issues, including the complexity of requests, the fact that they are tied to a hardware key, and that they are subject to change.

Noteworthy, Apple could at any time stop supporting a particular hardware identifier, if it is suspected of being used to exploit its servers, and change way of data transmitting.

Applidium says "anyone could now write an Android app that uses the real Siri! Or use Siri on an iPad!" But you will need a real unique user key of an actual iPhone 4S.

Siri Hack Сan Initiate Calls Using Your Thoughts

Aside from pressing the home button to activate Siri, this Siri hack reported by IntoMobile is absolutely thought-controlled. The developers who initiated Project Black Mirror recorded activity of brain waves with ECG sensors,  matched them to pre-saved patterns on a MacBook and then direct the matched commands to a chip that translates them to Siri. The developers linked about 25 brain wave patterns to different functions controlled by Siri, and they hope to bypass the need to press the home button with a completely automated solution. You can see on the video above how a developer initiates a call using Siri without pressing the Home button.

According to Forbes, security specialist Charlie Miller has found an exploit on iOS devices, which allows developers to put malware apps onto the App Store without detection. These malware apps can be used to steal user’s contacts, photo and other information, play a ringtone, make the device vibrate and more at any time the developer chooses.

Jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 beta released

redsn0w-099b8

The iPhone Dev-Team has updated RedSn0w with support for jailbreaking iOS 5.0.1 beta which was recently released for iOS developers. (UPDATE: iOS 5.0.1 released)

RedSn0w 0.9.9b8 recognizes 5.0.1 beta and you don't have to "point at 5.0 IPSW" any more. Since the IPSW isn't public, you'll still need to provide it once to redsn0w (Extra -> Select IPSW).
