The Complete Transcript of Steve Jobs' Apple Q4 Earnings Call

Here's the Apple CEO in his own words talking during Apple Q4 Earnings Call:

Hi, everybody. As most of you know, I don’t usually participate in Apple earnings calls, since you’re all in such capable hands with Peter and Tim. But I just couldn’t help dropping by for our first 20-billion-dollar quarter. I’d like to chat about a few things, and then stay for the rest of the Q&A, if that’s all right.

First, let me discuss iPhone. We sold 14.1 million iPhones in the quarter, which represents a 91 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter, and was well ahead of IDC’s latest published estimate of 64 percent growth for the global smartphone market in the September quarter. And it handily beats RIM’s 12.1 million BlackBerrys sold, in their most recent quarter ending in August.

CNet video: AppleTV review

CNet reviewd the new Apple TV 2-nd generation. Here's what they think of it:

The good: Costs $99; rent movies and TV shows from the iTunes Store; 99-cent HD TV show rentals on some Fox and ABC shows; supports Netflix streaming; incredibly small design; outstanding user interface; can be controlled by iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch; streams music and videos from PCs and Macs running iTunes; promising future AirPlay functionality should be available in November.

The bad: Very limited selection of TV shows, especially compared with Amazon Video On Demand; confusion between what's available on Apple TV iTunes Store and PC-based iTunes store; doesn't support the full suite of media apps (Pandora, etc.) available on the iPhone and iPad; can't connect to older, pre-HDMI TVs.

The bottom line: The Apple TV's new low $99 price makes it an easy impulse buy for Apple fans looking to bring Netflix into the living room, but you may want to wait until more content--or Apple's forthcoming AirPlay update--becomes available.

iTunes 10 Plays Media from Any iOS Device, No Syncing Required

itunes

It may have happened in a later iTunes 9 update, but iTunes 10 definitely includes a very helpful update. Plug in any iOS device, iPhones included, and you can play its music or videos without having to make a tricky sync.

iTunes' habit of insisting that every new iPod or iPhone plugged in must be a new purchase that you want to sync to your Library—and therefore wipe out all media on the device—was among the worst of its habits. In iTunes 10, and perhaps some up-to-date iTunes 9 versions, you can now plug in an iOS device, tell iTunes to Cancel the sync request, and from there on out simply play music or movies off whatever device you have plugged in through that iconic white cable.

Google's New Project May Compete with Apple

google_music

According to Reuters, Google is planning to create a music download store and digital song locker. Andy Rubin, Google Vice President of Engineering, is currently in talks with leading music labels over what the service could look like. And if Rubin’s plan works, we might even see the service out there before Christmas.

No actual deals have been signed yet, but the prospect of having another competitor in the music industry is very appealing to the labels. Currently, 70% of all digital music sales come from Apple.

iTunes 10 Now Available to Download

itunes

The next version of iTunes includes Ping, a social music discovery tool that allows users to follow friends and artists, helping customers to discover and share new music. The product is based on discovery, allowing users to see what their friends are listening to and what concerts they're going to. Users can choose to "follow" artists, as well as their friends, and iTunes will populate a customized top 10 list that represents what their friends are downloading. Users can also see concerts that are coming near them, and inform their friends that they will be attending.

iTunes 10 will also ship with a new logo, which Jobs joked reflects the fact that by next Spring, Apple is expected to surpass all CD sales in the U.S. The new iTunes logo dispenses of the CD that was previously featured, and only includes a musical note.

The 82mb file can be downloaded at apple.com/itunes/download/
