Apple is Now Selling Unlocked Contract-Free iPhone 4S in the U.S.

unlocked-iphone-4s

As it announced last month, Apple is now officially selling the iPhone 4S unlocked and contract free in the U.S.A.

The unlocked iPhone includes all the features of iPhone but without a contract commitment. You can activate and use it on the supported GSM wireless network of your choice, such as AT&T in the United States. The unlocked iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S will not work with CDMA-based carriers such as Verizon Wireless or Sprint.

If you don't want a multiyear service contract or if you prefer to use a local carrier when traveling abroad, the unlocked iPhone is the best choice. It arrives without a micro-SIM card, so you'll need an active micro-SIM card from any supported GSM carrier worldwide. To start using it, simply insert the micro-SIM card into the slot on your iPhone and turn it on by pressing and holding the On/Off button for a few seconds. Then follow the onscreen instructions to set up your iPhone.

You can purchase the 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB unlocked iPhone 4S for $649, $749, and $849 respectively.

Source Claims Hands-On Experience with iPhone 5 Prototype

iphone5

Rumors about “iPhone 5” have been still circulating, even despite the fact that Apple launched last month updated iPhone 4S. The next-generation iPhone is expected to be released next year and will be redesigned significantly. Business Insider now reports that it has received information from the source who have had access to an iPhone 5 prototype, providing the following details on the device:

We've been told this by an industry source who has been right about future Apple products in the past. We have not been able to verify what he told us with a second source. So we're still treating these details as rumors. You should probably still read this post with a nice fat dose of salt.

The source confirmed that Apple planned to launch the iPhone 5 this year but was forced to change its plans. The source mentioned the following details of the next-generation iPhone:

  • 4-inch screen
  • Aluminum back
  • Capacitive home button
  • "Flatter" form factor
  • Much faster than current hardware, but poor battery life
  • 10-megapixel rear camera
  • Siri prototype known as "Assistant", which had been the rumored name for the feature until its introduction

Hidden panorama mode discovered in Apple's iOS 5 Camera app

panorama

iOS hacker Conrad Kramer, better known as Contradev, have discovered a way how to enable the hidden panorama mode within Apple’s Camera application of the iOS 5. But, he noted, the feature seems to be not completed and in ongoing development by Apple. It offers settings for a grid and HDR when creating a panorama photo. A user can capture individual photos from left to right and the software will stitch it together. Kramer has said that the function is easily activated by "EnableFirebreak" key in a preference file within the mobile operating system.

Another hacker Grant Paul, also known as Chpwn, posted a screenshot (see above) of the panorama mode and has already submitted an application, called Firebreak, to Cydia to enable the panorama mode for Jailbroken iPhones.

It is obvious that Apple has been testing the Panorama mode that could appear in the iOS 5, but it is unclear why Apple did not include the feature in the final release.

Apple wants to improve OLED technology for potential use in future iPhones

patent

Apple demonstrates interest in improving OLED technology for future iPhone and iPad displays that will provide better battery life for such devices.  Earlier this week AppleInsider revealed a new patent application filled by Apple. The title of the patent is "Power Efficient Organic Light Emitting Diode Display" and describes different ways that could improve battery life, for example, displaying the color white.

OLED displays consume less power than traditional displays. This is possible because OLED technology is light emissive rather than light transmissive. But OLED displays, despite all their advantages, are less efficient that it is used for displaying a screen that is largely the color white, because an OLED panel has to utilize a range of color channels for every pixel on the display. Doing this can be power intensive and make the device inefficient.

For example, certain applications, such as word processing, spreadsheet design and use, database design and use, e-mail, and other business or productivity applications, typically utilize dark or black alphanumeric characters on a white background, such as to simulate writing or printing on a sheet of paper. As a result, these applications may cause the display of large expanses of white background with relatively little area devoted to the non-white alphanumeric characters. Such applications, therefore, may make the use of OLED displays unsuitable or undesirably power intensive for battery powered and/or portable electronic devices, such as handheld devices.

New Mac OS X Trojan horse hijacks GPU, spies and steals

trojan

A security firm Sophos, released a report which claims that a new Trojan horse was found to be hidden in a Mac OS X application, Graphic Converter 7.4.

The new Trojan called DevilRobber can steal sensitive user data, usernames and passwords, and take control of the computer’s GPU to generate Bitcoins, a form of currency used online, and is capable of spying on users by taking screenshots of their activity and sending the images online. DevilRobber, also known as "OSX/Miner-D," also runs scripts that can copy information “regarding truecrypt data, Vidalia (TOR plugin for Firefox), your Safari browsing history, and .bash_history” to a dump.txt file. The malware is also able to search for “pthc” files (the term means pre-teen hardcore pornography). And probably that is one of its secondary features to find traces of child abuse on affected computers that could be used against owners of such computers, for example.

Sophos suggests that users may notice that their computers have been attacked by the Trojan. This may affect overall computing performance when the Trojan steals GPU resources. The company asks users not to download software from unreliable sources. Though, common anti-virus programs are able to detect the Trojan.

This is just a first step, and as MuscleNerd said there's a lot of work left to do. So don't expect to see new utility anytime soon. But this is still great news.

Take a look at the screenshots with terminal and Cydia running on iPhone 4S:

Sony Courting Aaron Sorkin to Write Screenplay for Steve Jobs Movie

sorkin

Earlier this month we reported that Sony Pictures had acquired rights to the recently-released Steve Jobs’ authorized biography by Walter Isaacson. As the company is planning to adapt the story  for the big screen, Sony suggest that the best person for writing screenplay would be Aaron Sorkin, who had successfully transitioned the story of Facebook to film The Social Network. He also gained fame for his work on A Few Good Men, The West Wing, and most recently Moneyball with Brad Pitt.

Sony is moving forward with a Steve Jobs movie based on Isaacson's book. And one of the writers being courted by producers to pen his story, according to a person who was briefed on the project but not authorized to speak about it publicly, is Aaron Sorkin, Hollywood's chronicler-in-chief of the complicated visionary. Sony and a Sorkin representative declined to comment on the writer's potential involvement.

Noteworthy, Jobs tried to hired Sorkin to write a film for Pixar, bur he declined his proposal, giving the following explanation:

The truth is I don’t know how to tell those stories. I have a young kid who loves Pixar movies and she’ll turn cartwheels if I tell her I’m writing one and I don’t want to disappoint her by writing the only bad movie in the history of Pixar.
