Next MacBook Air to Adopt Faster, More Power Efficient SSD

chip

The Japanese website Macotakara claims that the new MacBook Air will include SSD drive with adopted a new Toggle DDR 2.0 type of NAND Flash Memory.

Current SSD device Blade X-gale supporting SATA 2.6 will be abolished and new 19nm flash memory will be packaged into smaller chip and will be soldered on base circuit directly.

The new Flash chips will be built directly in the MacBook Air's motherboard; they support speeds of 400Mb/s, and will allow future controllers to run faster than today’s SSDs with "half the number of channels, providing both a cost and space savings", and could improve battery life for an hour or more.

The resulting power throttling capability enables the drive’s high-performance levels without any increase in power consumption over a 40nm-class 16Gb NAND-based 256GB SSD. The controller also analyzes frequency of use and preferences of the user to automatically activate a low-power mode that can extend a notebook’s battery life for an hour or more.

Chinese manufacturers reportedly using Apple-rejected displays for iPad clones

ipad fake

Asian sources claim that touch panels for the iPad 2 that do not meet Apple quality requirements are used for production of iPad clones. In second quarter of this year 12-15 million of 9.7-inch IPS panels were manufactured by LG Display and Samsung Electronics, but Apple produces only 7-9 million iPad 2s. So it seems that the rest of panels that don't pass Apple's quality standards was sold to China-based white-box vendors.

Today Apple controls approximately 60 percent of the world's touch panel capacity and actively obtaining components that are in short supply. Now Apple has booked up much of the available production capacity, so other manufactures experience problems with release of their own tablets. For example, Amazon that could face difficulty with display orders for its LCD tablet.

Apple will offer free iPhone 3GS with 2-year mobile contract

poll

Mike Abramsky, Analyst at RBC Capital Markets, expects that Apple might offer the iPhone 3GS for free with 2-year contract after the iPhone 5 launch; that step will obviously attract mid-market buyers.

"While a $49 iPhone is already available (AT&T), psychologically a $0 iPhone provides a compelling offer," Abramsky wrote in a note to investors. "Proprietary survey data... suggests 14% are very/somewhat likely to buy the iPhone 3GS for free with 2-year contract, exceeding buying interest for the iPad (13%) and original iPhone (9%)."

Abramsky suggest that free iPhone 3GS will increase iPhone numbers to more than 150 million smartphones. That will be unusual for Apple, because the company always discontinues its two-year-old smartphones. For example, after launch of the iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS, first released in 2009, was dropped to $99, and the iPhone 3G was discontinued. Noteworthy to say that despite the fact that the iPhone 3GS was first released in 2009, it will be compatible with the iOS 5.

iPhone turns 4 years old today. Happy Birthday iPhone!

happy-birthday

On January 9th 2007 Steve Jobs presented the first ever Apple iPhone to the world. The Apple CEO started off the epic keynote by saying the famous lines, "This is a day, I've been looking forward to for 2 and a half years. Every once in a while, a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything…".

The iPhone launched on June 29, 2007. In its 4 years of existence, the device has changed a lot, starting from iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS and now it is iPhone 4. All these devices were truly revolutionary.

2011 has been an interesting year for the iPhone. In February Apple introduced the Verizon iPhone, ending AT&T 3 year exclusiveness in the US. In April we finally saw the white iPhone 4.

Apple sold close to 20 million iPhones last quarter and the rate is still quite amazing. The company is expected to sell 100 million units of its next-generation iPhone that will be probably released this fall.

Apple indeed "reinvented the phone". The iPhone completely redefined how a "smartphone" should look and act.

Apple blocks SHSH downgrade method in iOS 5

shsh

Apple does not allow users to install iOS version that is older than the latest released version. There is a workaround for this restriction. Users who have saved SHSH blobs using Cydia or TinyUmbrella for particular iOS version and particular iDevice  can restore to this iOS.

According to the iPhone Dev-Team, Apple is now making this process much more difficult with iOS 5. This means that current process will not work with iOS 5. But users who saved 4.x SHSH keys will be able to restore to 4.x.

iPhone 4 Gevey Sim unlock doesn't work with iOS 5 beta 2

geveyultra

Apple has blocked the ability to unlock the iPhone 4 using the Gevey SIM in recently released iOS 5.0 beta 2 firmware. MuscleNerd tweeted:

it's surprising Apple closed Gevey interposer hole in b2 rather than waiting until final (maybe they were under pressure)

gevey-sim-ios-5-beta-2-tweet

Gevey SIM was the only unlock for iPhone 4 users with basebands higher than 01.59. It uses the emergency dialer to force activate the locked baseband. MuscleNerd notes that its unlikely Gevey will try to battle Apple while iOS 5 is in the beta period.
