Apple has began a new iTunescountdown, offering a gift card for $10,000 to a customer who downloads the fifty billionth app, similar to earlier promotions on the App Store. During its most recent earnings call Apple said that it has surpassed 45 billion total app downloads.
Today Bloomberg reported that Jony Ive’s efforts to redesign iOS as part of his new softwaredesign role puts Apple at risk of delaying the release of iOS 7. While a public release is said to currently stay on schedule for "as soon as September", internal deadlines in the company has been pushed back as software teams race to finish iOS 7 and prepare a preview for Worldwide Developers Conference in June.
According to research firm Informa (via BBC News), app-based messaging traffic has for the first time overtaken SMS text messaging.
“Informa said almost 19 billion messages were sent per day on chat apps in 2012, compared with 17.6 billion SMS texts … It has projected that nearly 50 billion messages will be sent per day using these apps by 2014, compared with just over 21 billion traditional SMSs”.
Last month Googleleaked a video showing that Google Now tool would be coming to iOS, and today the company has released the updated version 3.0 of its Google Search app with support for Google Now service.
In March, Appleadded “offers in-app purchases” warning on the App Store and iTunes after a class action suit was brought by parents claiming that iOS in-app purchase service allowed children to easily spend thousands of dollars.
Earlier this week highly popular Swype keyboard become available for users of Android devices on Google Play, but only after the release of Jelly Bean with the built-in Swipe-like Gesture Typing functionality.
While it is known that Swype owner Nuance has a tight relationship with Apple through the Siri's voice recognition technology, a Swype executive has now confirmed that its company has had conversation with Apple over its keyboard technology. The Vice President Of Swype Aaron Sheedy said at Reddit AMA:

Susan Kare, the creator of many of the original elements of the interface for the Apple Macintosh in the mid-1980s, comments on her work at Apple in an interview with Path (via AppleInsider). Kare joined Apple the first time under the name "Macintosh artist" through software programmer Andy Hertzfeld, whom she knew from high school.
According to a report from TechCrunch, Amazon has acquired natural language search platform Evi for $26 million. Originally, the Evi app was distributed through the App Store, but Apple had threatened to delete the app over similarities to Siri. However, later the company said that it would "work with" the developer to reduce similarities. Evi was first launched in early 2012 and it is still available on the App Store as a free download. According to a report from AllThingsD, later today Facebook will bring the new Chat Heads functionality from Facebook Home to its iOS app as part of a new update. Previously it was reported that Facebook was negotiating with Apple to add some of the new features to its iOS Facebook app.
The popular file sharing app Bump today was updated to version 3.5.8. According to change notes, in the new versiondevelopers have removed the ability to share tracks from your iTunes library to your computer or another Bump user.
