Apple Seeded Second Developer Preview Of OS X With Several New Features

Apple seeded its second preview version of the upcoming OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion to developers. When introducing the new OS X operating system earlier this year, Apple noted the new version brings iOS functionality to the Mac. Among this popular iOS features are Notification Center, Messages, Game Center and AirPlay Mirroring. With the release of the new beta version, a few interesting features have been spotted.

Apple reportedly recruiting workers for Israeli R&D center

Hebrew-language newspaper Calcalist now reports that Apple and Anobit, which was acquired by Apple late last year, are actively recruiting workers for the company's research operations in Israel. That goes against the rumors claiming that the downsizing was said to be part of the acquisition, as some of Anobit's employees were no longer needed at the company.

According to the report, Anobit has changed its name to HDC (R&D center in Herzliya). The company's former president, Airel Maislos, is believed to be the new senior executive at Apple's development center.

Samsung official claims Apple plans to release 7.85-inch iPad this year

Citing an anonymous Samsung executive, The Korea Times has recently reported that Apple indeed plans to launch the 7.85-inch iPad model. The unknown Samsung’s executive revealed that Apple has committed a purchase at least $9.7 billion worth of components from the company, and if the demand for is strong, Apple’s expenditures will reach as much as $11 billion. The executive claims that the demand will be driven partly by the recently-released iPad, MacBook Air and a smaller iPad.

''The contract is expected to rise to $11 billion by the end of this year as Apple is planning to release a smaller iPad, probably with a 7.85-inch screen, and to sell more of its MacBook Air PCs using Samsung's faster solid state drive (SSD) storage,'' the official said.

Antitrust Investigators Subpoenaed Apple For Information On Search Deal With Google

According to Bloomberg, Federal Trade Commission’s antitrust investigators subpoenaed Apple requesting details on the company’s agreement with Google, according to which Google has become the default search engines on iOS devices. Reportedly, last year Google has paid Apple $1 billion in the iOS search agreement, and the subpoena is part of an antitrust investigation that is currently conducted over Google’s business practices.

Apple Began To Ship Components For Its TV Set 'In Small Quantities'

Last month analyst from Piper Jaffray Gene Munster said that Apple was investigating offerings of components for its rumored television set, contacting suppliers to find out what production capabilities they can provide.

According to Business Insider, a new report from analyst from Jeffries & Co. PeterMisek claims that "small quantities" of different components is shipped to Apple’s suppliers of television display panels. Misek expects that Apple will start commercial production of its TV set in May or June, with the release coming in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Apple provides additional details for Cupertino campus project

The city of Cupertino has recently presented the updated plans and renderings for Apple's Cupertino campus project that was first unveiled by late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. The main building, which Jobs described as "a little like a spaceship landed," will comprise 2.8 million square feet over its four stories. The campus will also accommodate a café and restaurant, fitness center and corporate auditorium with seating for up to 1,000 people, as well as 300,000 square feet of research facilities. The majority of power for the facilities will be supplied by an "on-site low carbon Central Plant" and will also be supplemented by solar power.

Apple Investing $300 Million in Austin, Texas to Add 3,600 More Workers

Texas Governor Rick Perry revealed on Friday that Apple plans to invest $304 million on a new campus in Austin that will create 3,600 new jobs and double the size of its workforce in Texas. Moreover, the state will award Apple $21 million over 10 years through the Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF). In return, Apple will expand its customer support, sales and accounting functions in the region.

"Apple is known for its bold innovation and game-changing designs, and the expansion of their Austin facility adds to the growing list of visionary high-tech companies that have found that Texas' economic climate is a perfect fit for their future, thanks to our low taxes, reasonable and predictable regulations, fair legal system and skilled workforce" Perry said. "Investments like this further Texas' potential to become the nation's next high-tech hub."

The TEF’s partnership with Apple will be one of the largest job creation initiatives in TEF history. To date, the fund has invested more than $443.4 million to help generate more than 62,000 new jobs and $15.4 billion in capital investment.

Apple published the list of 100 best of the best apps

Apple’s iTunes AppStore has recently reached 25 Billion downloaded apps. Apple has an updated its all time most popular apps list for both iPhone and iPad. There are 4 categories - iPhone apps, iPad apps, Free and Paid.

This list varies from country to country. For example, US AppStore number one apps are: Angry Birds, Facebook, Pages and Angry Birds HD Free, while in Russia - WhatsApp Messenger, Facebook, Angry Birds Seasons HD and Skype iPad.

Apple Claims It Created Or Supported 514,000 Jobs In The U.S.

In recent years Apple has come under increasing criticism for manufacturing its products outside the U.S., with a number of commentators believing that Apple should try to shift more jobs to the U.S. However, as AllThingsD notes, Apple has now become more public on its domestic impact by creating a new page on its website claiming the company is directly or indirectly responsible for over 500,000 U.S. jobs.

Thinner MacBook Pro Models in 13-Inch and 15-Inch Sizes Coming in April

Sources in Apple's upstream supply chain indicated to DigiTimes that new 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pros with a thinner and lighter design are expected to launch in April "at the soonest," with an initial shipment of just under a million units.  A redesigned version of the 17-inch MacBook Pro is apparently not expected at launch.

Apple's upgraded MacBook Pro lineup along with new MacBook Airs and the forthcoming OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion Mac operating system upgrade are expected in the industry to pose a "significant threat" to notebooks. Moreover, earlier this week Intel indicated that the company's next-generation Ivy Bridge chips are expected to debut eight to 10 weeks later than previously planned.

Apple introduces Developer ID

On Monday Apple sent out e-mails inviting developers to prepare their software for OS X Mountain Lion by joining the Developer ID program. The program will allow for apps to run on a Mac or iOS device that is protected by the Gatekeeper anti-malware system that requires that apps be certified through the Developer ID program to ensure seamless installation.

Gatekeeper is a new anti-malware feature that, according to Apple, will filter out malicious third-party applications and prevent OS X users from "unknowingly downloading and installing malicious software." To that end, the system implements a hierarchy of security that is based on digital certificates embedded in a software's code.

Apple Confirms Plans for Another Large Data Center in Prineville, Oregon

Apple revealed on Tuesday their plans to build a new data center in Prineville, Oregon on a 160-acre plot of land that it purchased for $5.6 million. Last December, sources close to Apple indicated that the company was "nearing a decision" to build a server farm in Oregon and was in discussions over the location, and a week ago Apple publicly confirmed that it has been developing the project, which is known as "Project Maverick."

"We purchased the land and it’s for a data center,” said Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet, adding that the facility will be "green." Earlier this week, the company revealed in a Facilities Environmental Report that its massive server farm in North Carolina will utilize the largest end-user-owned onsite solar array and the largest non utility fuel cell installation in the U.S., making it the only facility in its class to earn LEED Platinum certification.

Apple Updated Its Environmental Site With New Stats For 2011

Apple has published its 2012 Environmental Update and Facilities Report detailing company’s environmental footprint and contributions. The company said it recorded 5 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) in energy savings in 2011.
