Samsung’s Lawyers Ask Apple To See iPhone 5 and iPad 3

samsung suit

Samsung’s lawyers have asked Apple to hand over “final, commercial versions” of the next-generation iPhone and iPad and the retail packaging design of the devices. The company wants to evaluate if their future products, like the Droid Charge and the Galaxy Tab 10.1, could have similar features with them. This countersuit was filed after Samsung was asked to hand over Apple its prototypes of the Droid Charge, Galaxy Tab 8.9, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Infuse 4G and Galaxy S 2. In order to avoid future confusion with the Apple’s products, Samsung is asking the court to apply the same procedure that granted Apple’s lawyers access to Samsung’s upcoming products.

iPhone 3GS Won’t Get iOS 5

iphone 3gs

A new rumor suggests the two-year old iPhone 3GS won’t get the iOS 5 upgrade when Apple releases the first betas this summer and the final version of the OS likely this Fall. According to Russian analyst and Mobile Review editor Eldar Murtazin, the 2009 iPhone 3GS will stay on iOS 4, thus leaving the iPhone 4 and next-generation device Apple is scheduled to announce later this year as the only iPhone models capable of running iOS 5.

Apple Promises OS X Update to Delete Mac Defender Malware

macdefender-splash-screen

Apple will release a Mac OS X software update in the next few days that will automatically find, block and remove the popular Mac Defender malware from infected OS X machines.

A recent phishing scam has targeted Mac users by redirecting them from legitimate websites to fake websites which tell them that their computer is infected with a virus. The user is then offered Mac Defender “anti-virus” software to solve the issue. This “anti-virus” software is malware (i.e. malicious software).  Its ultimate goal is to get the user’s credit card information which may be used for fraudulent purposes. The most common names for this malware are MacDefender, MacProtector and MacSecurity.

iPhone 5 Parts Confirm New Camera Flash Position

camera

Yesterday we posted some portion of information about a case design for the “iPhone 5G” that seemed to suggest the next-generation device would relocate the rear-facing camera flash to opposite side of the lens, 9to5mac points to leaked iPhone 5 parts posted by well-sourced website Apple.Pro  which indeed show a rear camera lens with no Flash attached. The alleged parts, posted alongside old iPhone 4 camera components, show a redesigned internal front-facing lens, as well as a different rear-facing module lacking the flash part found on the iPhone 4. While it’s impossible to tell any improvements on the cameras from these photos alone, Apple.pro does seem to confirm today’s “crystal case” for the iPhone 5 with a relocated camera flash on the back panel.

Photo of Clipless Next-Gen iPod Nano with 1.3 MP Camera Surfaces

ipod nano 7

Taiwanese website Apple.pro posted a photo of what they claim to be a seventh generation iPod nano featuring a 1.3 megapixel rear camera. The photo again clearly shows the camera hole, although there is obviously no camera module included with the case. Interestingly, the new photo shows no clip attached to the rear of the case, with the Apple logo appearing directly on the case itself. Today’s photo seems to confirm previous speculation that, in order to make room for the camera, Apple would have to ditch the clip entirely, although it doesn’t make much sense considering Apple has been heavily touting the iPod nano as a sport accessory that can be worn on the outside of the user's clothing for quick access to device functions.

Apple Blocks Access to Cydia in its Stores

Cydia-Apple-Store

Apple seems really dislike everything that helps users to jailbreak their devices. This time Apple blocked access to the Cydia website via Wi-Fi network in Apple retail stores. If you try accessing Cydia on a device connected to one of Apple’s Wi-Fi hotspots, you’ll be surprised to see Apple’s website load instead. As far as we remember, last year federal regulators said that it was no longer illegal to hack or jailbreak an iPhone. However, Apple doesn’t care about that and continues its “war” with jailbroken devices.

Apple to Hold Early April Media Event for iOS 5

media event

According to German website Macerkopf.de, in early April Apple will hold a media event to introduce iOS 5 and revamped MobileMe services, widely expected to become a free syncing service offered by Apple for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch owners. The event would probably take place on Apple's campus in the 14th or 15th week of the year, the first or second week in April. This is line with Apple's pattern. For example, last year's iOS 4 event took place on April 8th at the company's headquarters in Cupertino. It would make a lot of sense if Apple did the same this year with iOS 5 as well.
