JavaScript Benchmark test: iPad 2 - iPad - iPhone 4 - Galaxy Tab - Nexus S





CNET.co.uk did some SunSpider Javascript benchmarks on the new iPad running iOS 4.3 and compared them with other iOS devices and a few Androids. The results are pretty impressive.

iPhone 4 and iPad with iOS 4.2 are behind both Android devices, but significantly faster with iOS 4.3 that features new WebKit 2 browser engine.

As for iPad 2, it is more powerful, it is over 50% faster than the previous iPad.

Apple officially announces iPad 2



Apple has just made its second-generation iPad official! It features a 1GHz dual-core A5 chip. The new CPU is said to be up to twice as fast, with graphics performance up to nine times better than on the original iPad, while power requirements have been kept the same. Battery life is expected to be the same - Apple is promising 10 hours. Pricing has been left unchanged, starting at $499.

The new tablet will come with an HDMI output capable of 1080p, but it requires $39 adapter. There's an enlarged speaker grille on the back though resolution remained the same as the original iPad's 1024 x 768.

iPad 2, finally, has two cameras, both front and rear! 720p video recording at 30fps will be available from the rear-facing camera, which can also do a 5x digital zoom. The front-facing camera will record at VGA resolution 30fps. FaceTime is supported on the iPad 2.

Steve Jobs to Appear at Today's Media Event

Despite the fact that Apple CEO Steve Jobs is on a health-related leave from the company now, Italian Apple site SetteB claims that he is definitely considering to appear at today’s big media event.

"If he did appear, sources said Jobs would at least make a brief appearance onstage, along with other top company execs in showing off Apple's latest version of its hugely popular tablet".

Apple is expected to introduce the second-generation iPad at an event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, California, today. The media event is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Pacific, 1 p.m. Eastern.

Gruber: iPad 2 may have a carbon fiber body

The author of Daring Fireball blog John Gruber suggested in one of his latest posts that the next-gen iPad will get a carbon fiber body instead of usual aluminum body.

"I could publish things I'm only half-sure about, like the iPad 2 switching from aluminum to a lightweight high-strength carbon fiber body, but I don't, because I'm only half sure and I've only heard about it from second-hand sources who themselves are unsure about it".

FaceTime for Mac Becomes Available on Mac App Store For 99 Cents

Along with new Macbook Pros yesterday Apple also released FaceTime for Mac.

Its latest beta-version became available back in October and allowed users who entered their Apple ID to chat with other users of Macs, iPhone 4 or iPod 4G.

The new version of application now supports 720p video, which can be made with the FaceTime HD camera in fresh MacBook Pros. The standard-definition camera on most other Apple devices can offer VGA-quality for Mac-to-Mac video calls.

Yes, Apple Will Introduce iPad 2 on March 2

Yesterday Apple had sent out official invitations to visit a media event, which will take place on March 2 in San Francisco, to presumably show off its new-generation iPad.

Apple Wants To Offer 24-bit Music On iTunes

According to CNN, Apple is currently negotiating with different record labels to improve the quality of songs available in the iTunes Music Store.

Current songs can be downloaded in 16-bit format, and Apple wants to increase the quality of downloads to 24-bit high-fidelity format. This is a format in which studio recordings are being originally captured. Then they usually get downgraded to 16-bit format and delivered to CDs and iTunes.

New Final Cut Pro May Be Released This Spring

A new report by TechCrunch claims a new update to Final Cut Pro will be released this spring. The publication informs that new version of application for professional video editing will represent "the biggest overhaul to Final Cut Pro since the original version was created over 10 years ago".

The last major update of The Final Cut Suite was back in July 2009, when Final Cut Pro 7 was released.

Apple May Also Refresh iMacs This Week

Today DigiTimes reported that this week Apple may launch not only new MacBook Pros but new iMacs as well. Citing its supply chain sources the publication revealed that Apple "may make some changes over the screen size to allow panel cutting to reach its optimization."

The latest information about new iMacs came in December 2010, when it was reported that new all-in-one desktops will appear in the first half of 2011 and will have a "new panel size and price point for the mainstream market."

Motorola's Xoom Will Get Flash Support This Spring

A new ad of Motorola's upcoming tablet Xoom on the website of Verizon Wireless shows that the device has 1 GHz dual-core processor that is "fully Flash-enabled for video-rich web". But as you can see on the screenshot above, there is a note, which shows that actually Adobe Flash is expected in Spring 2011.

Light Peak Technology May Appear in Macs Very Soon

CNet has recently reported that soon Apple will unveil a new high-speed connection technology for its devices, which is based on Intel's Light Peak technology. The latter should appear in products during the first half of 2011, according to Intel. But though Apple's new technology will be based on Intel's Light Peak, it was reported that Apple will brand it under its own name.

Light Peak allows to transfer information with 10 Gbps, which is almost three times faster than USB 3.0 (3.2 Gbps) and more than 10 times faster than Firewire 800 (800 Mbps). In practice it will allow to copy a full-length Blu-Ray movie in approximately 30 seconds.

The Chronic Dev Team has released Greenpois0n RC6.1, a new version of their ‘untethered’ iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak tool which now includes an update that disables Apple’s means of protecting the iBooks application from jailbreakers.

Recent Greenpois0n changelog:

Best Buy listed 5 new MacBook Pros with prices

Last weekend Best Buy listed five new SKUs for Mac notebooks with price between $1,199 and $2,499. They can be found as "New SKU" in online Laptop Configuration tool, with availability of "Coming Soon".

Though in the past Best Buy's inventory systems weren't precise, new listings provide information on pricing that did not appear anywhere else yet.

Fifth Beta of OS X 10.6.7 (10J858) Seeded To Developers

Apple today released a fifth beta of Mac OS X 10.6.7 to developers for testing. This time Safary was added to the list of focus area to concentrate on, joining Mac App Store, AirPort, Bonjour, SMB, and Graphics Drivers that had been included in previous builds. No known issues are listed in the documentation again. Fourth beta of Mac OS X 10.6.7 was released on February 11. An estimated target date for public release of Mac OS X 10.6.7 is still unclear.
