LA Unified School District students will get iPads

Apple has recently won a large supply contract for iPads to LA Unified School District. According to the program, all students in the school district will be equipped with iPad. The gadget will boast the Pearson Common Core System of Courses presented as a new app. Moreover, Apple’s iWork (Pages, Keynote, Numbers) and iLife (iMovie, iPhoto, GarageBand) suites will be preloaded on each iPad as well as some educational third-party apps.  Apple says that the $30 million commitment is the beginning of a bigger contract from Los Angeles schools.

The first 31,000 iPads are only the initial phase of the program, which plans to buy and distribute iPads to all 640,000 students in the nation’s second-largest school district by late 2014, Mark Hovatter, the chief facilities executive for the LAUSD, told CITEworld.

“The most important thing is to try to prepare the kids for the technology they are going to face when they are going to graduate,” said Hovatter. “This is phase one, a mix of high school, middle school, and elementary students. We’re targeting kids who most likely don’t have their own computers or laptops or iPads. Their only exposure to computers now is going to be in their schools.

Sim cards can be easily hacked

Karsten Nohl claims that some SIM cards feature a flaw in the encryption technology, so that telephones with the cards can be spied on.

This flaw enables the hackers to send a spoof text message to the device. The latter will answer by revealing the 56-bit data encryption standard key (DES). Using the key, the attacker gains possibility to install dangerous software on the device and even listen in on your phone calls, access/send text messages and much more.

Microsoft is abasing iPad. Again [video]

Microsoft has launched an ad attacking Apple. Or should be say launched again? It is not the first time Microsoft is  comparing its devices with iPad. The ad always claims Microsoft products to be much cooler. They feature exactly the specifics iPad lacks. For example, a built-in back stand, USB port, and keyboard accessory. All of these accessories are options on the iPad, though it still can be considered a disadvantage. Are they really? The price for such an ad is quite high to pay. It was announced that Microsoft lost 900 million dollars in the last quarter due to Surface discount.

Another interesting feature is that in all ads of such type the Voiceover says,”This isn’t going to end well for me, is it? Nope definitely not ending well.”  However, financial research shows that it is the Surface which is likely to be in trouble rather than Apple’s iPad.
