A research firm IDC has today released a report on global smartphone sales in the third quarter of 2014. According to this report, world's smartphone market grew 25% if to compare this year's results to those of the third quarter of 2013.

Apple CEO Tim Cook Is 'Proud to Be Gay'



In a letter written for Bloomberg Businessweek, Tim Cook declared his support for human equality and for the first time publicly admitted that he's gay. I must say, this was quite a surprising step as earlier Apple CEO was keeping his personal life away from public. According to the letter, Cook decided to tell about his sexuality to "bring comfort to anyone who feels alone" as well as to "inspire people to insist on their equality."

iOS 8 Adoption Rate Reaches 52% Five Weeks After Release



Several days ago, I told you about OS X Yosemite adoption rate, which at that time was 12.8%. Today I'd like to talk about Apple's iOS 8 and its adoption rate.

According to the latest figures published on Apple's App Store support page for developers, five weeks after the release, the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system is installed on 52% of devices. And this is an impressive result, I must admit.

Apple's Vice President Greg Joswiak Apologizes for iOS 8.0.1 Bug



Greg Joswiak, Apple's VP of iPhone marketing, earlier today had an interview with Re/code reporters Ina Fried and Walt Mossberg. During this interview, Apple representative apologized for the iOS 8.0.1 bug that made it impossible for many iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users to access Touch ID and cellular service on their smartphones. Joswiak claimed that a problem with iOS 8.0.1 was caused by the software distribution and not by the flaw in the operating system as it was believed earlier. Anyway, it was a terrible mistake, so I guess the guys from Cupertino should find out whose fault was that.

iAds Are Now Available in 70 New Countries



Apple on Tuesday announced that it has extended iAds support to additional 70 countries, making the advertising network available in 95 countries. The announcement was placed on Apple's official webpage for developers.

As to the countries where the new system has been launched this week, they include those of Europe, Americas, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Australia.

Net Cost of iPad Air 2 Components Is $275 - IHS Experts



A research firm called IHC has recently torn down Apple's new iPad Air 2 to find out how much money the guys from Cupertino spend on the hardware for their flagship tablet. As usual, the net cost of components is much lower than the actual price of the device, however, we should not forget that this cost does not include the price of assembly, transportation costs etc. Anyway, the experts claim that Apple spends about $275 on the 16GB version of the iPad Air 2, which is one dollar more than the net price of the last-year iPad Air. Keep in mind that this is the basic model; all the other are more expensive to assemble.

Apple Pay Now Boasts of More Than 1 Million Users in the USA



According to what Tim Cook said during the WSJ.D conference in Laguna Beach, California, more than one million users activated their credit or debit cards in the first 72 hours of Apple Pay availability in the USA. Cook also said that he used the recently-launched mobile payments system himself and that he was surprised to find out how easy it was to set everything up and to utilize the service in the store. Apple CEO claimed that the new system is "easy, secure, and private". And looks like he is right.

OS X Yosemite Adoption Rate Reaches 12.8% in First Six Days After Release



According to the latest report from Chitika, OS X Yosemite adoption rate is a bit higher than the adoption rate of OS X Mavericks last year. After six days of being available for public, the latest version of Apple's operating system for Macs was installed on 12.8% of computers in North America. In case you don't know, last year the adoption rate of OS X Mavericks was 12.4%.

PanguTeam Releases Update to Their Untethered Jailbreak Utility



The PanguTeam has just released an update for their utility for untethered jailbreak of iOS 8 - 8.1. According to what the hackers write, this update contains important improvements and bug fixes for Cydia, Mobile Substrate, iMessage and Safari. Those who had problems with these apps or those who waited for the stable version of Pangu8 can now upgrade to iOS 8.1 and jailbreak their devices with no fear at all. Everything will work fine, the developers claim.

iPhone 6 Plus Users Report Constant System Crashes



According to the latest reports from a wide number of iPhone 6 Plus users that can be found on Apple's Support Communities forum, the recently-released handset is quite glitchy. People claim that quite often the 5.5-inch smartphone crashes or reboots unexpectedly. As to the reason of such system crashes, it remains unknown. Many things point to the bug in the program code of iOS 8, however, it is unclear why only the larger iPhones are affected by this bug. Some experts believe something is wrong with the hardware. In any case, the guys from Cupertino are already aware of the problem and currently working on an effective solution.

iTunes Sales Fall 13%, Apple Hurries Up to Rebrand Beats Music



According to what people familiar with the matter claim, iTunes sales have fallen more than 13% this year. Keeping this information in mind, it now becomes clear why the guys from Cupertino have decided to rebrand the Beats Music service and make it a part of the iTunes brand. You see, more and more people prefer listening to music online to downloading separate songs or albums. There are several reasons for that, namely, the rapid development of 3G and 4G networks and the price, of course. It is cheaper to purchase the subscription for the music streaming service than to buy all the songs you like.

Foxconn Plans to Build Display Factory in China?



According to the latest reports from the Wall Street Journal reporters, Foxconn is currently thinking about building a display factory in northern China. This factory is expected to produce high-end screens for smartphones. If the authorities of Zhengzhou give a permission to open such a facility, Foxconn will get an opportunity to manufacture screens for Apple’s next-generation iPhones.

iPad Air 2 Teardown by iFixit [Video]



iFixit team has recently performed a teardown of the new full-size iPad Air 2. This teardown showed that Apple’s next-generation tablet indeed boasts of a faster processor, 2GB of RAM and a number of other improvements. However, according to what the experts say, the new device has become less repairable; that is why the iPad Air 2 Repairability Score is only 2 out of 10.
