Apple Testing A5X Variant in Next-Generation iPhone Prototype

features_hero

Apple is reportedly testing a prototype of next-generation iPhone hidden under the iPhone 4 casing. The next iPhone is said to not include the iPhone 4/4s form factor, and Apple is testing the prototype in older casing in order to throw off leaks. The prototype iPhone is used to test a variation of A5X processor in an iPhone. The A5X system-on-a-chip in the iPad 3 was specifically designed to run the new Retina Display, so that adding this chip in the next iPhone wouldn’t make much sense.

Apple's television set could be called "iPanel"

hdtv

Analyst Peter Misek with Jefferies said he has "enough confidence" that the Apple's anticipated television set will be launching in the fourth quarter of calendar 2012 and will be "far more than a TV”.

He said the name "iPanel" would be better for the product than "iTV," as the term TV gives a limited impression of what the rumored device will be able to do.

"It is a display, gaming center, media hub, computer, home automator, etc.," Misek said in justifying the "iPanel" name. "Also, Apple would likely have difficulty getting naming rights from the UK TV network ITV."

Apple may soon begin selling iPad 2 units built in Brazil

FoxconnBrazil

According to a tipster who spoke with MacRumors, Apple may start selling the Brazilian-built iPad 2 soon, because the locally assembled 16-gigabyte iPad 2, which sells for $399 in the U.S., has received the proper certification to go on sale in Brazil.

The Brazil-built iPad 2 units are expected to be available alongside regular units built in China, also by Foxconn. Apple's new third-generation Retina display iPad has apparently not yet received approval for sale, whether assembled in Brazil or China.

Apple reportedly 'noodling with' 7.85-inch iPad prototype

ipadscreen

John Gruber of Daring Fireball claims he knows that Apple has a test 7.85-inch iPad with a resolution of 1,024 by 768 in its lab. Though it's not clear if the device will ever see the light of day.

"I've heard from numerous people that that's one of the ideas that they're noodling with," he said.

The height of such a device would be the same as the width of the current iPad. After testing the approximate size using a screenshot rotated into landscape mode, Gruber believes it would be "usable."

Step-by-step Tutorial: How to (Un)Tether Jailbreak and Unlock iPhone 3GS Using Sn0wBreeze 2.9.3 (Windows) [iOS 5.1]

iphone-3gs-windows-custom-sn0wbreeze-51

UPDATE: Apple released iOS 5.1.1 and has stopped signing iOS 5.1, so you can NOT restore to 5.1 any more (both original and custom), unless you have saved your SHSH keys for 5.0.1. If you are on 5.1 you can jailbreak with redsn0w. iOS is also tethered jailbreakable with redsn0w.

Using this tutorial you will be able to create a custom firmware, tether jailbreak and unlock iOS 5.1 running on iPhone 3GS. This tutorial uses Sn0wBreeze 2.9.3 for Windows.

If you have iPhone 3GS with an old bootrom version 359.3, the jailbreak is untethered. If your device has bootrom version 359.3.2 and higher, jailbreak will be tethered. You can detect your bootrom version using this tutorial.

Tethered jailbreak means that each time you restart your device you will need to connect it to a computer and run iBooty.

Sn0wBreeze will also preserve baseband version if you need carrier unlock. It can also update your modem version to 06.15 if you need unlock and stuck with 05.14 or higher baseband. If you have new iPhone 3GS that was made after 28 week of 2011 upgrading modem will not help to unlock.

One-Third of U.S. High School Students Now Own an iPhone

iphone_education_apps

Piper Jaffray’ latest semi-annual survey of 5,600 U.S. high school students show that 34% of surveyed students now own an iPhone, and 40% of surveyed students indicated that they intend to purchase an iPhone within the next six months.

Such boom seems to be driven by low-cost options from Apple. Apple and AT&T dropped the price of the iPhone 3GS to free on-contract with the introduction of the iPhone 4S late last year.

In our most recent survey the percentage of teens that own an iPhone came in at 34%, up from 23% in the Fall and 17% last Spring. We believe the meaningful uptick in iPhone ownership among teens may be driven by the cheaper $49 iPhone 3GS (in some cases free). Interest in purchasing an iPhone in the next 6 months rose to 40% (another all-time high vs. our previous surveys). Purchase intent was at 38% in our last survey in the Fall.

Let's compare iOS Text Editor apps

Brett Terpstra posted an in depth comparison of all the text editor applications available for iPhone and iPad.

This is a feature comparison of text editors on iOS. The information was compiled by the web community on an open Google spreadsheet. I cannot vouch for its current accuracy, but will be verifying everything as I'm able. It's meant to help you find the most useful way to write, code or take notes for your personal needs. Every editor is geared toward a slightly different purpose, with their own strengths and focus.

The table is available here or as an image below:

imac120401

Digitimes reports that Apple's iMacs due for release later this year will not only arrive noticeably slimmer than existing models but may also be the first of the company's desktops to feature anti-reflective displays.
