The Success of Apple’s Retail Division

fifth-avenue

Apple could not achieve such success without its 324 retail stores, employing 30, 000 employees. Though it is not easy to become Apple’s employee, but it is worth it. Apple pays its employees much more than its competitors. For example, Geniuses on average make $18 dollars an hour, with the helpful blue shirts earning around $16 dollars an hour as they guide customers to new products, show them how to use services, and make sales. So it is clearly that Apple’s employees are highly motivated and expected to work hard and sell the Apple experience. Not surprisingly that in the first two fiscal quarters for 2011, Apple’s retail division has already earned $7.04 billion in revenue of Apple’s $51.41 billion. Apple’s retail stores offer a level of convenience and friendliness that big retail chains just can’t match.

Apple Files Lawsuit Against Kid Who Sold White iPhone 4 Parts

WhiteiPhone4Now

A few months ago we told you about the teenager, Fei Lam, whose site, WhiteiPhone4Now.com had been forced to shut down. He managed to sell $130,000 worth of the white iPhone 4 parts. And only yesterday Apple decided to file a lawsuit against Lam and his parents. The suit claims that the site led to the infringement and dilution of Apple’s trademarks and that it was involved in deceptive practices through selling the iPhone conversion kits. Curiously, Apple has also filed a voluntary dismissal of the lawsuit, which may mean that a settlement has been reached, although the request for dismissal without prejudice may mean that Apple could come after Lim again at a later date.

iPad 2 To Launch In Russia, Ukraine, Brazil, Chile and Argentina This Friday

ipad 2

9to5mac reports that Apple starts officially selling the iPad 2 in Russia and Ukraine this Friday, May 27. That’s the same day carrier Aircel will start offering the iPhone 4 in India, in what it looks like a day focused around international releases ahead of the WWDC. The Russian iPad 2 sales will begin this Friday through retail chain Re:Store, with MediaMarkt, Beliy Veter Cifrovoi, ION, Technosila and Eldorado also looking to jump on board for the May 27 rollout. Retailers are expecting “unprecedented demand” for the iPad 2, which doesn’t surprise considering the device’s popularity and the lack of Apple’s retail presence in Russia.

Large Pharmaceutical Companies Subscribing iPads to Sales Reps

Pharma2

Pharmaceutical sales reps are trying to find better ways to engage and sale their products during all their sales calls. Doctors and physicians typically only give these sales reps 30 seconds of their time as well. That’s not very much time so every second is important, and so is presentation.

Eric Newmark, an analyst at IDC Health Insights, says that sales reps “still struggle with their ability to differentiate themselves through clear, concise, and interactive messaging.” So the pharmaceutical industry may have a solution to the problem: Purchase many Apple iPads to give the sale reps “a quicker, lighter and more attractive way of displaying drug-related information,” Newmark wrote.

Digital Downloads Drive A Music Industry Recovery

Nielsen-Soundtrack-Report

According to Nielsen Soundscan report, US music sales have increased by 1.6% over the course of this year. The report gives the credit for the rise, unsurprisingly, to digital music sales, which in terms of albums was up 16.8% and in terms of individual tracks was up 9.6%. As for physical media, CDs were down by 8.8%, but Vinyl increased by 37%, although they only account for 1.2% of sales. Nielsen interestingly suggests the arrival of the Beatles on iTunes as a key reason, pointing to a dramatic increase  starting from when it was released on iTunes. As for the most popular genre’s, Rock had the greatest market share in album sales whilst Pop was the most popular for digital tracks.

iPad Cannibalization Of PC Market Slows

ipad

The iPad’s cannibalization of the PC market may have slowed. New purchasers of the iPad are less likely to have foregone purchasing a PC. It found that of those who had purchased the iPad over the holiday season, 12% would have decided against a PC purchase when they bought an iPad. This is a 2% drop from the 14% of those decided against a PC amongst those who had owned their iPad for 6 months or more. Netbooks were saved the most, with iPad cannibalization falling by 50%, which actually led the netbook market to grow by 21% between September 2010 and March 2011. The report contradicts what analysts were calling the “iPad effect” in the first quarter of 2011 when US PC sales fell 10.7%.

University of Delaware Says “Apple Store” Coming On Campus

delaware

The University of Delaware has confirmed that, as part of new campus construction plans, an Apple Store will be located next to the new Bookstore, Starbucks, and other facilities. It’s not clear whether the “store” will be a full-feature retail location, a “mini store”, an authorized reseller, or something else specifically tailored to students. Indeed, several rumors in the past years suggested Apple was planning campus-specific Apple Stores, but the plans were never finalized.

Apple Continues to Close on Nokia for Title of World's Top Smartphone Vendor

apple vs nokia

Apple continues to hold second place among the world's top smartphone manufacturers with 18.7% market behind Nokia, with unit sales up 114% year-over-year. Although market-leader Nokia's smartphone share declines, Apple’s share is rising by three percentage from the year-ago quarter.

Apple reached a new record shipment volume in a single quarter, and inched closer to market leader Nokia with fewer than six million units separating the two companies. The company posted market-beating year-over-year growth and recorded triple-digit growth in two key markets: the United States, with the release of its CDMA-enabled iPhone, and Greater China. Additionally, the company enlisted South Korean Telecom and Saudi Telecom as carrier providers of the iPhone.

Numbers on Apple Store visitors reveals retail revenues will grow

Applestores

Yesterday, on May 3 Needham & Co analyst Charlie Wolf sent a note to his clients, where he reveals that Apple retail stores made only 12.9% of worldwide revenues for the company in March. Due to the increased number of distribution points, such as big-box retailers and international carrier stores the revenue has declined since the second quarter of 2008, when the revenue share from retail stores was 21.6%.

Apple Changes Its App Policy, Focuses On The Quality, Not Quantity

itunes-app-store

Recently Apple has made changes to its app policy and focused on making the iOS App Store the most attractive rather than simply the biggest.

Lately the company has banned the idea of "incentivized app installs", which was used by certain game developers to prompt players to install other apps if they want to continue playing. Because of the incentives some apps become artificially popular and don’t reflect the actual situation in top games chart, for instance.

Apple Beats Microsoft in First Quarter Profit

microsoft_logo

Six months ago Apple’s quarterly revenue for the first time in approximately 15 years was higher than the Microsoft’s one. But Microsoft was unbeatable with its high profit margins that the company achieved thanks to its software sales. The situation changed in the past fiscal quarter.   Today Microsoft has announced net profit of $5.23 billion for the first calendar quarter (third fiscal quarter) of 2011. Apple last week reported profits of $5.99 billion over the same period, which corresponded to the company's second fiscal quarter of 2011. It seems that Apple finally surpassed its longtime rival in almost all position. Moreover Apple’s market cap is now nearly $100 billion higher than Microsoft's.
