Sim cards can be easily hacked





Karsten Nohl claims that some SIM cards feature a flaw in the encryption technology, so that telephones with the cards can be spied on.

This flaw enables the hackers to send a spoof text message to the device. The latter will answer by revealing the 56-bit data encryption standard key (DES). Using the key, the attacker gains possibility to install dangerous software on the device and even listen in on your phone calls, access/send text messages and much more.

Apple’s Developer Center Was Hacked



Apple’s developer website was hacked. This is the official statement made by Apple today. As you probably know, the dev webpage has been down for more than 4 days now due to the work on restoring the database system, updating the server software and troubleshooting. Well, at least this is what we’re told.

iTunes revenue in Q3



FORTUNE has found out how much iTunes earned in Q3.

iTunes, Software and Services  have recently been consolidated by Apple into one line item which had a revenue of  $12.9 billion in fiscal year 2012. They are now the second fastest increasing  revenue torrent and according to analysts it will be ahead of both the iPhone and iPad in year to take the first place.

iTunes revenue has recently been estimated by nearly 40 analysts  - 22 Wall Street professionals and 18 amateurs. The range of their estimates is from $5.6 billion suggested by Jefferies' Peter Misek to as low as $3.3 billion from Sunil Shah, an independent analyst from the Braeburn Group. The average estimate is of $4.17 billion. The figure is 30% higher than the $3.20 billion listed for the same quarter last year.

iPhone 5S rumored fingerprint sensor



Apple has recently published a patent which describes that the rumored fingerprint sensor for the iPhone 5S will be built into the  screen. It was suggested before that the sensor would be inserted in the Home button.

iPhone 5S has been long rumored to have a fingerprint sensor, the latter being a distinguishing feature from the previous models. In the new model the fingerprint sensor will be used to  verify purchases and to unlock the device. It will certainly be a breakthrough technology. However, it essential to say that Apple is not the first company using  new technologies such as  cardless payments. Fingerprint sensors have been rumored to be used in iPhones since Apple acquired the  mobile security company AuthenTec last year.

Apple Store App Will Get a New Look



According to an unknown source, on Tuesday, July 23rd, Apple will introduce a completely redesigned Apple Store app for both iPhone and iPod touch. It will get a new design in order to match the recently updated App Store, iTunes Store, and iBookstore apps for iOS 6. However, this is not the only reason for such a change of appearance.

Google is launching Nexus 7



On July 24th Google is holding an event in San Francisco, where it is likely to show an upgraded NExus 7 tablet. It was rumored that the tablet will cost $229 for 16GB and $269 for 32GB. Retailers are about to get stock of the device on July 20th and they are offering sales on the current versions.

Thanks for 9to5Google, the photos of the next Nexus 7 tablet are revealed. It is claimed that the manufacturer of the device is ASUS and it comes in 16GB and 32GB models. The tablet has two cameras, a 1.2MP shooter on the front and a 5MP rear made by Chicony.

Apple is purchacing a Canadian mapping company



It is not the first time Apple is purchasing a smaller local company to improve  mapping. There were at least three big purchases,   Placebase, C3 and Poly9. All of them helped Apple modernize its growing mapping and location services effort. Apple's maps leave a lot to be desired, so the company's PR managers claim: “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.”

It has been reported recently that  that Apple has signed a deal with Locationary, a Canadian service which helps manage databases of location, cope with duplicate information and delete outdated entries.

There Would Be Two Versions of the Lower Cost iPhone



Latest leaked documents that were first seen on PhoneArena show that there would be two models of the so-called iPhone Lite. They would have some differences in hardware, however, the screen size and processor are said to be the same or nearly the same. The code names of these Apple devices are iPhone Zenvo and iPhone Zagato/Bertone.

Apple and Samsung are about to reach a patent settlement



According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple and Samsung are negotiating the patent problem. The year 2012 was marked by  celebrated cases regarding patent infringement claims. Last summer Apple won a major lawsuit against Samsung in California court. The issue concerned design patent infringement claims regarding the iPad and iPhone.
Since last summer, the Cupertino and South Korean companies have been negotiating privately quite regularly. They were obviously trying to come to some sort of settlement.  However, some lawsuits are been filed since then. It was rumored that in February the tech giants were close to an agreement, but as we can see, it did not work out.

According to the latest New York Times report, an unknown zero-day iOS exploit was recently sold for $500.000. Well, we all knew that big companies like Apple pay hackers good money when they discover vulnerabilities in the operating system. But half a million... I think that’s too much.
