New possibilities of Bluetooth 4.0 In Apple's Latest Products

Bluetooth 4.0

Latest MacBook Airs and Mac Minis incorporate new Bluetooth 4.0 chips. This technology includes Bluetooth Low Energy specification that provides low-latency and low-power implementation. One of the examples of its possible usage is Nike+ accessory, which isn’t actually based on this technology, but works very similar to it. It's based on a sensor that transfers signals wirelessly from your shoe to your iOS device in order to record your daily run.

iOS 5 features gesture-based control panel that replaces hardware buttons

controls

iOS 5 Beta 3 includes a new floating panel that provides users with access to a variety of hardware controls and gesture-based commands without using an iPad or iPhone’s physical buttons. The panel could also replace hardware controls when they are damaged. To enable the panel, go to Settings->General->Accessibility->AssistiveTouch. That new menu is available for four sections: Home, Device, Gestures and Favorites. In the Settings users can set up custom gestures and play with the built-in ones. The Home tab performs the same function as the Home button, Device tab opens a sub-menu with other controls to increase / decrease volume, lock or rotate the screen, and unlock rotation, while the usage of Favorites and Gestures are not clear yet.

How to secure your iPhone or iPad and fix PDF vulnerability

As you might know hacker Comex has found a new PDF vulnerability and released JailBreakMe tool that uses it. These were great news. The bad ones is that your iPhone and iPad and iPod Touch is at risk. Bad guys can use the same vulnerability to take control of your device and do whatever they want with it.

Apple will fix it in iOS 4.3.4 firmware some day. Fortunately Comex has already released a patch for his JailbreakMe 3.0 exploit to protect already jailbroken devices from any malicious use of the exploit.

The package called 'PDF Patcher 2' can be downloaded and installed from Cydia. To jailbreak please use our step-by-step instructions.

New jailbreak will be released soon on Jailbreakme.com

jailbreakme

Comex's jailbreak based on new PDF exploit was unofficially leaked recently. It looks like it will be released quite soon. Currently Jailbreakme.com shows the "coming soon" yellow sticky, that looks like the sticky Apple puts on its store right before new products hit the virtual shelves.

The new jailbreak is mostly for Apple iPad 2 users, because all other devices can be jailbroken with existing tools.

Apple’s iPhone 3GS going to compete with Android in India

iPhone3GS

On May 27 the iPhone 4 was officially put on the market of India with the price starting at 34,500 Indian rupees (around $760) for version of 16 GB with a two-year service agreement. But the price for iPhone as high as $760 (which the government is not satisfied with) makes the iconic item out of reach for the 41.6 percent of the India’s population that lives below the poverty line of $1.25 a day.

Apple will release two new iPhone models in late September

iphone5-iphone4s

According to Business Insider analyst Chris Whitmore reports that Apple plans to release not only the iPhone 5 this fall, but they will also release a cheaper version of the iPhone, the iPhone 4S.

This means that Apple will release a minor update to the iPhone 4, the iPhone 4S, as well as a major update called the iPhone 5.

"With Nokia and RIMM struggling," he writes, "the time is right for Apple to aggressively penetrate the mid range smart-phone market (i.e. $300-500 category) to dramatically expand its [total addressable market] and market share."

As Whitmore sees it, an iPhone 4S that is unlocked, priced around $349, and comes with a pre-paid voice plan would "drive significantly greater penetration" into an addressable market that has grown to include 1.5 billion potential customers in 98 countries, two thirds of whom prefer pre-paid plans.

The rumors about cheaper iPhone have been reports floating around for a long time. It's a pity that Whitmore only offers us his prediction without any evidence or inside knowledge.

Here is a summary of what we have in mind right now:

iPhone 5:

  • 4" screen
  • new design
  • dual core
  • 8MP camera
  • possible dual LED and/or dual camera
  • 64GB
  • 1080p video

iPhone 4S:

  • 3.5"
  • old design
  • single core
  • 5MP camera
  • 4GB Storage
  • 720p video

iPhone Hacker Geohot is working for Facebook

geohot

Geohot is famous iPhone and Sony Playstation hacker, the creator of blackra1n and limerain jailbreak methods, as well as blacksn0w unlock. Now he works at Facebook.

Joshua Hill (P0sixninja) recently mentioned this fact in an interview.

Geohot started working at Facebook in May and actually announced it on his Facebook account on June 17th:

"Facebook is really an amazing place to work...first hackathon over."

This means that we should not expect any new iPhone jailbreak and unlock utils from him.

iPhone 4 Gevey Sim unlock doesn't work with iOS 5 beta 2

geveyultra

Apple has blocked the ability to unlock the iPhone 4 using the Gevey SIM in recently released iOS 5.0 beta 2 firmware. MuscleNerd tweeted:

it's surprising Apple closed Gevey interposer hole in b2 rather than waiting until final (maybe they were under pressure)

gevey-sim-ios-5-beta-2-tweet

Gevey SIM was the only unlock for iPhone 4 users with basebands higher than 01.59. It uses the emergency dialer to force activate the locked baseband. MuscleNerd notes that its unlikely Gevey will try to battle Apple while iOS 5 is in the beta period.

Legal hardware unlock for iPhone 4 released

geveyultra

Gevey has released a new hardware unlock for iPhone 4 called Gevey Ultra SIM.

The main difference compared to the old Gevey unlock method is that you don't have to dial 112. dialing 112/911 and hanging up is illegal in most countries, now this problem is gone.

Gevey Ultra works with

  • iOS 4.0, 4.1, 4.2.1, 4.3, 4.3.1, 4.3.2, 4.3.3
  • Basebands 01.59, 02.10, 03.10.01, 04.10, 04.10.01

Some sources claim that Gevey Ultra works even with the latest iOS 5 beta 1.

If you have 01.59 baseband you can still use free software ultrasn0w unlock. For everything else - just buy Gevey Ultra for $35 here.

The installation is simple, but requires jailbreak. Good luck iOS 4.3.3 is jailbreakable. See our jailbreak instructions here (Mac OS) and here (Windows).

Take a look at the Gevey Ultra video demo:
